Guilfoyle spikers place fifth

CORAOPOLIS — The Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic boys volleyball team won eight of the 10 sets it played and finished fifth in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Tournament on Saturday.

BG won all three sets against Farrell (25-16, 25-15, 25-20), went 2-1 against Baldwin (25-19, 25-19, 17-25) and all three against host OLSH (25-16, 25-16, 25-15) during pool play.

That moved the Marauders into the quarterfinals, which consisted of a one-set showdown. BG lost that set to Beaver County Christian, 27-25, to end its tournament run.

Vincent Good had 26 service points, 73 assists and 23 digs for BG, while Michael Burke had 22 points and 21 digs, Tyler Rumbaugh 13 points, 19 kills and 10 digs, and Charles Patterson five points, 42 kills and 10 digs.

Central finished 0-8. The Scarlet Dragons fell to Seton-LaSalle, 25-18, 25-21, Armstrong, 25-20, 25-24, Mars, 25-24, 25-22, and Beaver County Christian, 25-16, 25-16.

Doug Shade collected 10 kills and nine blocks for Central, while Austin Laufle dished out 20 assists, and Nathan Earnest recorded 12 service points and 16 assists.

H.S. Tennis

Tigers play Dallastown

The District 6 Class 3A boys team tennis champion, Hollidaysburg, will host District 3 runner-up Dallastown in the first round of the PIAA playoffs on Tuesday.

The match is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Altoona’s Gorilla House Gym. It will be preceded by a 2A match at noon between District 6 champ Westmont Hilltop and District 3 runner-up Lancaster Country Day.

District 5 2A champ Bedford will play District 7 runner-up Indiana at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Somerset High School.

Lions edge Chucks

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Jake Hunter had two hits and three RBIs, and Matt Hartman had two hits while also picking up the win on the mound as Altoona edged Punxsutawney, 7-6, in area high school baseball action on Saturday.

Owen Kravetz also had two hits for the Mountain Lions, who scored four runs in the third inning to take control of the game.

Mason Criswell had two hits and three RBIs for Bavarian Hall, while Zack Harshbarger and Tyrone Miller had two hits apiece for Cumming Motors.
