Ertter, Zazvrskey lead Huskies to DH sweep

EBENSBURG — Bishop Carroll improved to 4-8 with a Laurel Highlands Conference high school baseball twinbill sweep of visiting Cambria Heights on Thursday.

In the opener, winning pitcher Carson Ertter struck out 13 in five innings in the Huskies’ 5-4 triumph. Logan Gottshall had two hits while Ertter, Jake Zazvrskey and Evan Becquet added solo RBI efforts. Heights got two hits and two RBIs from Tyler Lamont.

In the nightcap, Carroll needed just five innings and some help from seven Heights errors, for a 15-3 win. The Huskies got three hits and an RBI from Zazvrskey to go two hits and three RBIs from Devon Gomish. Ertter added two hits and two RBIs to go with two RBIs each from Gottshall and Muriceak.

ALEXANDRIA — Juniata Valley followed up a 4-0 lead after one inning by going off for 11 runs in the second and calling it a day after two and a half innings as Caden Rupert struck out six and allowed one hit on the way to an ICC North shutout of Glendale.

Gabe Brower scored three runs on two hits — a home run and a double — with two RBIs. Nathan Richner and Jacob Hensor tripled for the Hornets for three and two RBIs respectively, and Rupert doubled twice with one RBI. Juniata Valley is now 11-2.

HUNTINGDON — Alex Mykut smacked a two-run homer, Zach Peck tripled in Drew Weglarz with a triple of his own, and then Peck scored on a wild pitch in a five-run fifth inning for Huntingdon, which went on to rebound from its first loss to beat Penns Valley in Mountain League action.

Peck had two triples and scored twice in his first varsity start. Rece Ritchey had nine strikeouts in relief for Huntingdon to p[ick up the win. Nick Holesa had four total hits, including a triple, and scored two runs.

CLEARFIELD — Clearfield’s Eli Glass hit a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, and winning pitcher Rich Wilson brought Harrison Peacock home with a walkoff double to end Huntingdon’s bid for an undefeated season after 13 games on Wednesday.

Nick Holesa hit a two-run homer for the Bearcats in the top of the third inning. Alex Mykut took the loss for Huntingdon despite an 11-strikeout day.

The account did not appear in Thursday’s Mirror because of a computer issue.
