Tyrone netters edge Huntingdon

HUNTINGDON — Ethan Vipond’s third-set win over Bruce Perow at No. 1 singles loomed large, as Tyrone split the remaining six matches with host Huntingdon and emerged with a 4-3 Mountain League boys tennis victory on Friday.

Paul Lemaire prevailed at No. 2 singles for the Golden Eagles, then teamed with Vipond to win at No. 1 doubles. Brandon Kemp provided Tyrone its other team point with a win at No. 5 singles. Peter Kruse and Brandt Sliver were singles winners for Huntingdon, and they also formed a winning doubles team for the Bearcats.

NB cruises

LOYSBURG — Cadin Ebersole finished first in the 100 and 200 meters, Nic Wilburn prevailed in both hurdle races, and Ian Zimmerman won the 800 and 1600 to highlight the Northern Bedford boys track and field team’s 108-40 victory against visiting Williamsburg on Friday afternoon.

Sadie McConnell’s victories in the long and triple jumps, Grace Burke’s firsts in the shot put and discus, Denae Hershberger’s triumphs in the 1600 and 3200 and Rachel Lingenfelter’s wins in the 400 and 800 keyed the Lady Panthers over Williamsburg (125-15) and HOPE for Hyndman (125-0). In addition, Northern’s Ariel Reed finished first in both hurdle events, and Mackenzie Gates won the 100 and tied for the first in the 200.

The Williamsburg girls were a 39-10 victor over Hyndman.

Guilfoyle spikers fall

STATE COLLEGE — Despite receiving 28 kills from Charles Patterson, Bishop Guifoyle fell in five sets to State College,16-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 15-9, in boys high school volleyball on Friday.

Vincent Good had 53 assists and 10 digs for the Marauders, Adam Spencer had 23 digs, Michael Burke had 1 kills and 14 digs, and Tyler Rumbaugh had 13 kills.

Senior Olympics nears

The 17th annual Blair County Senior Olympics will begin on June 1 and continue through June 28.

There will be more than 30 events that include bocce, bowling, golf, horseshoes, swimming, track and field events, trivia, spelling bee challenges, Nintendo Wii bowling tournaments and more. New this year is the addition of frisbee golf and bean bag toss.

The Senior Olympics are open to anyone age 50 and over.

Registration forms and a complete events schedule is currently available at all four area Senior Centers and on the Blair Senior Services’ website www.blairsenior.org.

A registration fee of $14 qualifies you to participate in events of your choosing, to receive a Senior Olympics T-shirt and an invitation to the Kick-Off Party and Closing Ceremony Social, featuring entertainment by the Sharptones. Registration forms will be accepted through Friday, May 11. No registration forms will be accepted after that date.
