Talko advances to district final

The last two District 6 Class 2A singles tennis champions will square off for the 2018 title.

Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic junior Ryne Talko, the 2016 champ, will face defending champion, senior Adam Kush of Westmont Hilltop, in the final at noon Thursday at the Altoona Area High School Leopold Rec Center courts.

Kush beat Talko in the last year’s final, 6-4, 6-2.

Talko won two matches on Tuesday to advance to the final. He beat Tyrone’s Paul Lemaire in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and Richland’s Cole Kazmierczyk in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-4.

Kush topped Huntingdon’s Bruce Perow, 6-0, 6-0, and Tyrone’s Ethan Vipond, 6-0, 6-0.

The 3A tournament will be held today through the semifinals with the final set for 10 a.m. Thursday.

Tigers win on road

MERCERSBURG — Rami Alkhafaji and Anthony Menard were winners both in singles and as a doubles combination to spark Hollidaysburg in a 6-3 win at Mercersburg Academy in boys tennis.

Rohan Gupta and Will Tyndall also were singles winners for the Golden Tigers, while David Auerbeck and Nick Viduya formed a victorious doubles team.

Central falls

DuBOIS — The Central high school volleyball team slipped to 0-8 with a 25-19, 25-18, 25-18 loss at DuBois.

Doug Shade came up with 10 blocks and four kills for the Scarlet Dragons, while Alec Madden had nine service points and four kills. Central’s Nathan Earnest handed out six assists.
