Devils outlast Pirates in 11 innings

BELLWOOD — Mark Stewart pitched seven shutout innings, and Travis Luensmann and Trentin Whaley both contributed two-run singles to highlight a four-run rally in the 11th inning that lifted Bellwood-Antis to a 6-2 victory over Williamsburg in the second game of a high school baseball doubleheader on Wednesday.

Bellwood also won the first game via the mercy rule, 16-1 in four innings, as Ian McFarland drove in three runs and Luensmann, Trent Walker and Alex Schmoke had two RBIs apiece.

The victories improved Bellwood’s overall record to 9-2 and the Blue Devils’ Inter-County Conference North Division record to 7-2.

SOMERSET — Cole Maranowski homered, and winning pitcher Spencer Yutzy drove in four runs as Somerset topped Cambria Heights, 13-3, in a Laurel Highlands Conference clash.

Ben Williams doubled, scored a run and drove in another for the Highlanders.

RURAL VALLEY — Julian Groenendaal recorded 22 kills and 15 digs as Huntingdon downed West Shamokin, 25-20, 25-16, 20-25, 26-24, in high school boys volleyball on Tuesday evening.

The match report did not appear in Wednesday’s Mirror because of a computer issue.

The Bearcats’ Matias Berger came up with 13 digs, 10 service points and eight kills, while Brady Hawkins made 15 digs, and Andrew Cooper handed out 32 assists to go along with seven digs. Fox Miller led Huntingdon with 12 service points.

ORE HILL — The team of Wes Elder, Mark Steele, Walt Focht and Stan Snyder won the Opening Day Scramble on Saturday at Iron Masters Country Club.

The team finished with a score of 62 to edge the team of Rick Lee, Mase McCready, Rich Eckard and Jim Brown by one stroke.
