Alkhafaji makes it to finals

It will be a Golden Tiger and a Little Lion in the finals of the District 6 3A singles championships this morning at the Altoona Area High School Leopold Rec Center courts in high school tennis action.

Hollidaysburg’s Rami Alkhafaji and State College’s Matt Vanden will meet up in the finals at 10 a.m., thanks to their efforts on Wednesday during opening-day action.

Alkhafaji received a first-round bye, then beat Altoona’s Jarod Marasco 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. State College’s Owen Lloyd lost to Alkhafaji in the semifinals, 6-2, 6-2. Marasco had advanced to his second match with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Mifflin County’s John Hurlburt.

Vanden knocked off Altoona’s Jonah Brandt, 6-1, 6-0, to get to the semifinals, where he beat Hollidaysburg’s Rohan Gupta, 6-1, 6-0. Gupta had advanced to the semifinals with a first-round bye, and then a 6-0, 6-0 win over Mifflin County’s Matt Hugendubler. Brandt downed Central Mountain’s Matt Schubach 6-1, 6-3 to get to his second-round matcup.

The 2A championship featuring Bishop Guilfoyle’s Ryne Talko and Westmont Hilltop’s Adam Kush takes place at noon today, following the Vanden-Alkhafaji matchup.

Bedford sweeps Red Devils

EBENSBURG — Bedford improved to 15-0 with a 5-0 sweep of Central Cambria.

Caleb Beidle, Jess Hampton and Luke Dague won singles matches for the Bisons. Zach Kachman and Lance Dague won at No. 1 doubles, and Joey Windows and Cole Hampton won at No. 2 doubles.

Bearcats take two

SAXTON — Huntingdon defeated Tussey Mountain, 6-1 and 4-1, in a doubleheader sweep behind a pair of singles wins from Bruce Perow, Soren Borgardt and Peter Kruse.

Mason Burket and Hunter Cassatt won a doubles match for the Titans.

Tyrone triumphs

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Ethan Vipond won a singles match and teamed with Paul Lemaire to win a doubles match as Tyrone topped Punxsutawney, 4-2.

Caden Brooks also won a singles match, and the team of Hunter Reese and Trevor Fink won at No. 3 doubles.
