Marauders open with win; Mountie girls sweep meet

CLARION — Bishop Guilfoyle picked up a big win early in the season, defeating District 10 power Fort LeBoeuf, 25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 25-23, at Clarion High School in high school boys volleyball on Wednesday.

The Marauders saw big performances from Charles Patterson with 19 kills and 10 digs while Tyler Rumbaugh added 14 kills, four aces and 13 digs. Vincent Good also had 41 assists and added 10 digs for Guilfoyle.

Setter Austin Goodsell was the stat leader for Fort LeBoeuf with 37 assists, three aces and four blocks.

Bearcat spikers win

HUNTINGDON — Julian Groenendaal had 19 kills and nine service points as Huntingdon defeated West Shamokin, 25-13, 25-15, 17-25, 25-19, in boys volleyball action.

Matias Berger led the Bearcats with 11 service points, adding 13 kills and six aces.

Andrew Cooper had 34 assists. Brady Hawkins chipped in four digs.

Dragons fall in four

MARTINSBURG — Kaven Gahagan collected 11 kills and seven service points, and Doug Shade registered 11 blocks, but Central fell to visiting DuBois, 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, in boys volleyball.

Austin Laufle contributed 14 assists and seven service points for the Scarlet Dragons, who also received eight kills from Alec Madden, 12 assists from Nathan Earnest and five blocks from Devin Clapper. DuBois was led by Zack Koren’s 19 kills.

Bisons sweep

JOHNSTOWN — Caleb Beidle, Jess Hampton and Zach Kachman only dropped seven games in sweeping their six singles matches as the Bedford Area High School boys tennis team defeated Bishop McCort twice, 4-1 and 5-0, in Laurel Highlands Conference competition on Wednesday at the North Fork Tennis Club.

Cole Hampton and Joey Windows won a pair of doubles matches for the Bisons, who improved to 6-0.

P-O girls sweep

MARTINSBURG — The Philipsburg-Osceola High School girls track and field team opened its season with wins over Central (78-52) and Clearfield (68.5-58.5). On the boys side, P-O beat Central (83-49) while losing to Clearfield (91.5-40.4).

For the P-O girls, Samantha Bainey won three events (high jump, 100 hurdles, 1600). For Central, Samantha Grove won two events ( shot put, discus).

On the boys side, Philipsburg-Osceola got two wins each from Zach Myers (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Tristan Beausigneur (100, 200) and Dane Soltys (long jump, triple jump). Central got two wins from Jarod Dick (shot put, discus).
