Area rugby team opens slate Sunday

The Blair United/Hollidaysburg Rugby club kicks off its league season on Sunday with a home game against Indiana Area at 1 p.m. at Hollidaysburg’s Tiger Stadium.

Admission is free.

The team returns 15 letterwinners from its first season, of which the team finished 2-7-1. Led by USA Rugby High School All-American Gus Dellinger, also a football and wrestling standout, the team is still very young with only five seniors as most of the starters being juniors or sophomores. There are 25 players on the roster from Altoona, Bishop Guilfoyle and Hollidaysburg.

Practices are limited to Tuesday and Thursday with games on Sunday.

McKeirnan competes

LEWISBURG — Hollidaysburg sophomore Conor McKeirnan was the only area competitor in action on the first day of the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday at Bucknell University.

McKeirnan finished 32nd in the Class 3A boys 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1 minute, 47.85 seconds.

The meet continues today with the remaining Class 3A events before turning things over to the Class 2A swimmers for Friday and Saturday.
