Area wrestlers have tough night
By Todd Irwin
Huntingdon had won four straight District 6 Class 2A titles, but that streak had to come to an end at some point.
On Saturday night, the streak was ended by Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy.
Saint Joseph’s ran away with the team title by 59.5 points, 208-148.5, over Mount Union, and had four champions and eight qualifiers.
The Bearcats finished in third place with 132 points and three runners-up in Izac Benson (132), Alex Mykut (195) and Landon Fisher (220). They qualified five to the Southwest Regional Tournament, including fourth-placer Ryder Kocik (182) and fifth-placer Izzy Reed (285).
“Five through, and I’m pleased with that number,” Huntingdon coach Jon Mykut said. “All (of the finalists) had tough kids. They just went out and went after it, and it just didn’t fall our way in the finals. That’s the way it goes.”
It was a rough night for area finalists as they went a collective 0-8 in the finals.
Glendale’s Brock McMillen (113) and Tristan Rutter (126), Portage’s Cole Sossong (160), Penn Cambria’s Derek Brown (170) and Central Cambria’s Nate Martin (285) all had to settle for second.
A total of 28 area wrestlers qualified for the Southwest Regional by placing in the top six of their weight classes.
In addition to Huntingdon’s qualifiers, Glendale had three more qualifiers in fourth-placer Seth Dudurich (195), fifth-placer Cory Johnston (220) and sixth-placer Isaac Krause (152).
Penn Cambria had three more qualifiers in third-placer Chase Proudfit (132) and fifth-placers Brock Talko (138) and Jarred Stoy (160). Brown, who won by injury default over Penns Valley’s Carter Felker in the semifinals, was pinned by Ligonier Valley’s four-time district champion Robby Patrick in 3:30 in the finals.
“Derek had a pretty good tournament,” Penn Cambria coach Todd Niebauer said. “He hit a very complete wrestler in the finals. Not much to say when you have that matchup. We will look at some of the things that we did in the other matches that we need to work on and get them tweaked for next week.”
Central had three qualifiers in third-placer Braeden Swab (138) and sixth-placers Ian Crouch (106) and Logan Marko (145).
“Not where we felt we could have been,” Central coach Dave Marko said, “but the name of the game is to advance, and we got three to advance.”
Tyrone had two qualifiers in fourth-placers Hunter Walk (106) and Jamal Hicks (126). Moshannon Valley’s Jon Dale (160) was third, and Alex Richner (126) was fifth. Claysburg-Kimmel’s Kobe Harr (170) was third, and Cade Keithley (145) was fourth.
Portage’s Logan Shaffer (third, 126), Cambria Heights’ Tyler Kirkpatrick (fifth, 145) and Central Cambria’s Jon Croft (sixth, 220) also qualified.
Of the finalists, Martin came the closest to winning, The second-seeded senior dropped lost a 2-1 tiebreaker decision to Bishop McCort’s returning champion Josiah Jones. Jones, ranked No. 1 by PA Power Wrestling, rode Martin out in the first 30-second tiebreaker, and then he escaped in the second.
“It was close, and I definitely improved from the last time we met up,” Martin said. “Last time, he pinned me, but I wrestled a better match and had a great weekend. He’s tough on top. I hope to meet him again in the regional finals. That would be pretty awesome.”
“It’s a confidence builder,” Central Cambria coach Bob Nikolishen said. “Josiah Jones is a scorpion. When he’s on top, you’ve got to keep trying to shake him off your back so he doesn’t bite you.”
The top-seeded Alex Mykut, who survived a 1-0 ultimate tiebreaker win over Johnstown’s Sam Barber in the semifinals, dropped a 3-2 decision to Mount Union’s Levi Hockenberry in the finals. Hockenberry escaped in the third, and Mykut couldn’t get a takedown.
“Those guys have wrestled each other multiple times,” Coach Mykut said, “and it’s always been close. Each one knows what the other does because they’re so familiar with each other. My hat’s off to them. They got a good shot off in the second period, and he was able to finish it.”
Benson, who beat Marion Center’s Mike Turner, 11-4, in the semis, dropped a 5-2 decision to Saint Joseph’s returning champ Jacob Powers. Powers had two takedowns, while Benson had one in the third.
Fisher, who eked out a 6-5 decision to Mount Union’s Jake Ryan in the semis, was beaten by Bishop McCort’s top-ranked Anthony Walters in the finals.
“Walters is one of the best wrestlers in the state at any weight class,” Mykut said. “Hopefully we see him next week and the weekend after.”
McMillen, who had a pin and two technical falls, suffered a 6-3 loss to Mount Union’s Josh Boozel in the finals. McMillen, a freshman, is 35-2, and both of his losses have come to Boozel.
“Brock dominated his way to the finals,” Glendale coach Billy Dubler said. “(Boozel) is a kid he knows he can beat, and that’s a kid he will beat. I think he’s going to refocus, and next week it will be a different outcome.”
Saint Joseph’s freshman Malachi DuVall was up 7-0 on Rutter when he got the fall in 3:13. Rutter reached the finals with a 5-1 win over Hicks, who was the story of the tournament on the first day.
The third-seeded Sossong, who beat the second-seeded Dale, 7-2, in the semis, was beaten by West Branch’s Derek Yingling, 5-1. Yingling had two takedowns.
Notes: Sixteen other area wrestlers placed seventh or eighth, but didn’t qualify for regionals. … Forest Hills’ Byron Daubert (120) was voted the Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches. … Westmont Hilltop’s Matt Beaujon was voted the Coach of the Year by the coaches.
