Nittany Lions destroy Terps

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — It may be mid-January, but the Penn State wrestling team looked in mid-March form this weekend.

The Nittany Lions completed a weekend sweep of dual meets Sunday as they blitzed Maryland, 47-3, at Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland.

On Sunday, Penn State won nine of 10 bouts, including six by fall, two by major decision and a decision, and amassed a 36-1 advantage in takedowns.

In wins over Purdue and Maryland, Penn State won on the scoreboard by a combined 90-9 score and put together a remarkable 64-1 edge in takedowns.

“I think the guys wrestled well. There was a lot of energy. The guys were feeding off one another. They’re coming together as a team,” Penn State coach Cael Sanderson said.

Perhaps the biggest win of the day for the Nittany Lions came in the final bout, long after the final was decided. No. 8 Nick Nevills used a first-period takedown, escape and riding-time point to edge No. 6 Youssif Hemida, 4-1.

“He’s a guy who has really incredible shots when he takes them. He needs to take them and then finish. He has to get his finish percentage up. He looks good. I’m excited about him,” Sanderson said.

Nevills admitted he is rounding back into form.

“I think I was kind of in a slump and was trying to get back,” he said. “I’m on the right path to where I want to be, but I’m not where I want to be yet. I get in on leg attacks but I don’t finish them as fast as I could and I need to get off bottom faster. It’s a matter of putting in the work and more effort in practice and in matches.”

As it has done much of the season, Penn State faced a deficit after the 125-pound bout only to come roaring back with four consecutive wins and forge a big lead heading into intermission.

On Sunday, Devin Schnupp returned to the lineup after being sidelined by illness on Friday. He just missed tying the bout with several takedown attempts in the late going in a 4-2 loss.

The Terps’ lead was short-lived as Corey Keener built a 14-1 lead midway through the second period before scoring a fall in 3:48.

It was just the first of eight consecutive bonus-point wins for the Nittany Lions.

At 141, Nick Lee piled up eight takedowns in a 22-10 major decision over veteran Terp Ryan Diehl

Then, at 149 and 157, top-ranked Zain Retherford and Jason Nolf ran their nation-leading pin totals to 15 on the season. Retherford scored his in 1:19 and Nolf in 1:43 as the Nittany Lions led at the break, 22-3.

Retherford won his 81stconsecutive match, seven short of tying the Penn State mark of 88 in a row set by former Nittany Lion heavyweight and current Maryland coach Kerry McCoy.

After the intermission, Penn State went right back into pin mode.

Vincenzo Joseph (1:23), Mark Hall (2:44) and Bo Nickal (3:23) went back-to-back-to-back falls.

At 197, Anthony Cassar took his turn in the lineup and produced a 14-5 major decision. He has been splitting time with Shakur Rasheed.

“It would be nice to see them against the top-ranked guys. Shakur’s a guy who is going to get a lot of bonus points. Cassar has that ability. They’ll work it out. We’ll figure it out,” Sanderson said.

Next weekend figures to present stiffer competition. Minnesota comes to Rec Hall at 7 p.m. Friday and then Penn State travels to New Jersey for a 2 p.m. Sunday dual.

“I think our guys are ready for next week, Minnesota and Rutgers,” Sanderson said. “You come to Penn State for big matches and that’s what I get excited for. We’re looking forward to it.”
