Flash finish strong, notch NEC victory

TEANECK, N.J. — Saint Francis broke open a close game with a dominant second half and a big edge from beyond the 3-point arc to knock off host Fairleigh Dickinson, 80-56, in Northeast Conference women’s basketball on Sunday afternoon.

Jessica Kovatch fired in 24 points in 25 minutes of action for the Red Flash, evened their overall record at 7-7 while improving to 2-0 in the conference. Kovatch was 5-for-10 from 3-point range, leading a Saint Francis team that made 13 treys compared to just three for the Knights.

Leah Morrow came off the bench to score 13 points and make five steals for Saint Francis, while Ace Harrison and Courtney Zezza each chipped in with 10 points.

Freshman and Bellwood-Antis product Karson Swogger also scored 10 for the Flash, going 2-for-5 from 3-point range while playing 17 minutes. Swogger also registered three steals.

Saint Francis only led by four points at halftime — 36-32 — but the margin ballooned to 11 by the end of the third quarter. The Flash then put it away by carrying the final quarter, 25-12.

Saint Francis shot 45 percent from beyond the arc over the last two quarters, making 9 of 20 3s.

Amina Markovic and Peniel M’Bikata fronted Fairleigh Dickinson with 14 points apeice. The Knights dipped to 1-1 in the NEC and 8-5 overall.
