Poor third sinks Flash

NEW YORK — A big third-quarter run from the hot-shooting Columbia Lions was too much to overcome Wednesday night as the Saint Francis women’s basketball team dropped their third staight game, 94-81, at the Levian Gymnasium in collegiate action.

A 12-2 run to start the second half for Columbia moved a five-point halftime deficit to a 15-point lead for the Lions. Columbia used a 54-percent shooting night from the field, and a 58-percent showing from 3-point land, to hold off Saint Francis, which fell to 3-5.

Saint Francis was unable to get any closer than eight points after that. Cold shooting from three-point range was the culprit as the Red Flash shot just 20 percent — 6 of 30 — from the arc.

Saint Francis, which got 23 points from Caitlyn Kroll, a career best, jumped out to an 18-17 lead in the first quarter. However, a 24-18 showing in the second quarter gave Columbia a 41-36 halftime advantage.

Jessica Kovatch chipped in with 18 for the Red Flash, who also got 10 points from Kyasia Duling. Columbia got 25 points from Camille Zimmerman. The Red Flash host Youngstown State this Saturday at 2 p.m.
