Bedford’s May finishes 27th

PIAA cross country

HERSHEY — Bedford Area High School freshman Van May was the top finisher among area runners in the PIAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Parkview Country Club.

May ran a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds to earn a 27th-place finish in Class 2A boys.

Tyrone Area junior Zach Kohler was not far behind May, finishing in 32nd place with a time of 17:02. Kohler’s brother, senior Joe, was 73rd in 17:35.

Junior Ohm Vyas led the Central Cambria boys to a 13th-place finish among Class 2A boys teams. Vyas was 49th overall in 17:23, and Red Devils sophomore Nate Kuntz was 90th in 17:45.

The Bedford boys were 19th as a team.

Northern Bedford freshman Ian Zimmerman turned in a time of 17:50 to finish 63rd in Class 1A boys. His teammate, sophomore Ian Sherlock, was 113th in 18:28.

Altoona senior Greg Williams, the lone area representative in Class 3A, ran a time of 18:02 and was 192nd overall.

Central Cambria senior Carly Kaschalk ran the best time among area girls, finishing in 20:49 in Class 2A to end up 76th. Teammate Kacy McKeel, a junior, was 85th in 20:54.

Portage senior Kasey Chobany was tops among area 1A girls, placing 82nd in 21:31. District 5 champ Denae Hershberger, a sophomore from Northern Bedford, was 127th in 22:23.

Cambria Heights junior Quinn McElhenny was 133rd in 22:26, and teammate Maggie McMullen, a freshman, was 135th in 22:27.

The Penns Valley boys captured the team championship in Class 1A by accumulating 68 points. Elk County Catholic was second with 95.

Other team champions were La Salle College (3A boys), Wyomissing Area (2A boys), Fox Chapel (3A girls), Danville (2A girls) and Fairview (1A girls).

Individual boys champions were Neshaminy’s Rusty Kujdych in 3A (15:47), Jersey Shore’s Isaac Davis in 2A (15:56) and Winchester Thurston’s Tristan Forsythe in 1A (16:12).

Individual girls champions were Cardinal O’Hara’s Elizabeth Mancini in 3A (18:18), Northern York’s Marlee Starliper in 2A (17:50) and Marian Catholic’s Tina Capparell in 1A (19:01).
