Altoona hockey team beats Central Cambria

The Altoona Mountain Lions received a pair of goals from Cameron Yeckley as they were able to get past Central Cambria, 5-3, Tuesday night at Galactic Ice in varsity hockey action.

Goaltender Evan Montgomery saved 17-of-20 shots for Altoona, which improved to 3-0.

Austin Homan had two assists for the Mountain Lions. Also scoring goals for Altoona were Sammy Wyland, Owen Kravetz and Tyler Umbleby.

Goalies: Montgomery, A, 17-of-20 saves.

Records: Altoona (3-0).

Mikolajczyk, Saltsburg win

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The team of Brad Mikolajczyk and Mark Saltsburg won top golfing honors at the Cross Country Scramble held recently at the Scotch Valley Country Club.

There was a three-way tie for second place between the teams of Artie and Derek Fink, Jason Steinbugl and Joe Hall, along with Justin Ohler and Raphael Hite. Fifth-place honors went to Jimmy and Andrew Ferguson.

Ted Krol hit a hole-in-one while playing on No. 12. It was 171 yards long off the blue tees using a 4-hybrid.


Terry Anderson of Hollidaysburg recently sank his first-ever hole-in-one while playing golf in Orlando, Fla.

He aced the shot on No. 7, a 132-yard long, par-3 hole. He was playing alongside Jim Hancuff, Joe Saclaro and Dave Hall. Anderson is a member of the Scotch Valley Country Club.

PSU’s Slattery honored

WINTHROP, Mass. — Penn State freshman Sophie Slattery was named the College Hockey America Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon. This is the first CHA honor for Slattery.


Altoona Area parent Dave Skelley who addressed the school board on behalf of parents, players and taxpayers Monday night, preferred the Mid-Penn Conference over the WPIAL “mainly because I want to see our kids compete and be successful,” he said.
