Chestnut Ridge wins B-A tourney

BELLWOOD — The Chestnut Ridge girls volleyball team captured the Bellwood-Antis Invitational on Saturday, beating Central, 20-25, 25-22, 19-17 in the finals in high school action.

The Lions went 4-2 in pool play in the 12-team tournament. They beat Hollidaysburg (25-20, 27-25), Mount Union 925-22, 25-12) and Bellwood-Antis (25-21, 25-8).

In the playoffs, Ridge downed McConnellsburg (25-14), Hollidaysburg again (25-17) and then Central in the finals.

Lydia Mock led the winners with 64 kills and 12 blocks while Kayla Diehl added 30 kills to go with 90 assists from Megan Diehl. Makayla Weyant contributed 39 digs while Matti McMillen added 35.

“I could not be more proud of our team’s resiliency and desire to win,” Lady Lions coach Wendy Miller said. “We played some very, very tough competition and we stepped up each and every time.”

Altoona captures title

BRADFORD — The Altoona JV volleyball team won the championship of the Lady Owl Invitational held at Bradford High School.

The Lady Spikers went 10-2 in the nine-team tournament.

They beat St. Marys, 25-22, 24-25, 15-9 in the finals after downing Otto Eldred, 25-19, 25-17 in the semifinals. They beat Warren, 25-19, to get to the semifinals. In pool play, Altoona beat Otto Eldred (2-0) and Johnsonburg (2-0) while splitting with Kane.

Julia Savino had 32 service points, 12 aces and 28 digs to go with Hailey Alwine’s 43 digs, 13 kills and 22 service points. Alex Troutman contributed 32 service points and 19 digs while Kassie Clawson chipped in with 32 assists and 11 service points. Lyzee Wilson rounded out the totals with 25 kills.

Kaschalk has top finish

CARLISLE — The Altoona, Bedford and Central Cambria boys and girls cross country teams competed on Saturday at the 25th annual Carlisle Invitational, where Central’s Cambria’s Carly Kaschalk and Bedford’s Van May were the top girls and boys finishers, respectively.

The Central Cambria girls finished eighth overall with Kaschalk placing ninth in 19:42. May finished 28th overall on the boys side in 16:42. The Bedford boys were 39th overall.

The Central Cambria boys top runner was Nate Kuntz, who took 36th in 16:46. The Red Devils finished 17th overall.

Altoona was led by Greg Williams on the boys side, who took 47th in 16:42. The Mountain Lions finished 22nd. The Lady Lions were led by Amanda Chamberlain, who placed 85th in 21:22. The Lady Lions took 19th as a team.

The Bedford girls were led by Claudia Sigel finished 124th in 21:54. The team was 34th.

In the JV race, Altoona’s top boy was Jace Greene, who took 50th in 17:59. On the girls side, Regan Baker was 37th in 21:43.

Tigers edge McDowell

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Zach Wyland connected on a 10-yard pass from Garrett Kratzer for a touchdown and again for two-point conversation following a 30-yard score from Hunter Barr as Hollidaysburg defeated McDowell, 14-8, in junior varsity football.

The Tigers ran the ball out of the back of the endzone for a safety in the final seconds. Ben Drass also had an interception for Hollidaysburg.

PSU women shut out

DULUTH, Minn. — The Penn State women’s hockey team closed out its season-opening series with a 3-0 loss to the No. 5 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at the AMSOIL Arena. Minnesota Duluth netted its three goals during the final 12:05 of regulation.

On Saturday, Penn State’s Hannah Ehresmann stopped 33-straight shots before allowing the first goal of the afternoon at 7:55 into the final period.

After the Nittany Lions (0-2-0) went to the PK at 6:57 into the third period, which was the lone penalty for either team on the day, Jalyn Elmes put the Bulldogs in front at 7:55.
