Central Cambria duo makes 2A final

No. 1 seeds Olivia Ratchford and Liz Brady of Central Cambria will play in the District 6 2A Doubles Championship on Thursday, thanks to their performances on Tuesday in the opening round of the tournament held at the Leopold Courts at Altoona Area High School.

In quarterfinal-round action, the two downed Tyrone’s Ava McCracken and Lara Pilgrim, 6-2, 6-0. That win put them in the semifinals where they disposed of Central’s Yvonne Longnecker and Kennedi Berkhimer, 6-1, 7-6. The Lady Scarlet Dragons duo beat Westmont Hilltop’s Sydney Podrebarac and Melanie Hong, 6-1, 6-4 to get to the semifinals.

Thursday’s title matchup will be against Westmont Hilltop’s Lindsay Pullin and Abby Majercsik, the No. 2 seeds. Pullin and Majercsik beat Central’s Kierra Mountain and Lindsey Kensinger in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-3. In the semifinals, Pullin and Majercsik beat Central Cambria’s other duo, Maria Farabaugh and Emily Sikora, 4-6,6-3, 6-3. The Lady Red Devils duo beat Tyrone’s Winnie Grot and Grace Gensimore, 6-1, 6-0, to get to the semifinals.

The finals will be held at the Leopold Courts on Thursday.

JV girls now 11-0

BELLWOOD — The Juniata Valley girls cross country team improved to 11-0 with wins over Bellwood-Antis (24-33) and Cambria Heights (25-32) in high school action.

The win clinched the Inter-County Conference title for the Lady Hornets, who went 6-0 in league competition this season. Juniata Valley’s top runner was Lexi Reed, who took third in 23:17.

Also, Cambria Heights beat Bellwood-Antis, 27-29. Jenna Bartlett won the race for B-A in 22:23. The Lady Highlanders got a second-place finish from Quinn McElhenny in 22:27.

On the boys side, Bellwood-Antis beat both JV (21-34) and Heights (18-41). Heights also lost to the Green Hornets, 19-41.

Robert VanKirk of B-A won the race in 18:51. JV’s Kyle DeRugen was second in 19:01. The Highlanders top runner was Gabe Sheridan, who took fourth in 20:17.

Zimmerman sets record

LOYSBURG — Northern Bedford’s Ian Zimmerman set a new course record with a time of 18:19 to help the boys split with a 17-39 win over West Branch and a 22-37 loss to Southern Fulton. Southern’s Nate Voight, Issac Fitz, Josh Stocker, and Sage Minteer rounded out the top five in high school cross country.

On the girls side, Denae Hershberger won with a time of 24:19, but the Lady Panthers fell to Southern Fulton, 15-50.
