Altoona misses out on title shot
DuBOIS — Derek McAlkich shot a 72, but it wasn’t enough to push Altoona into the 3A PIAA high school golf team championships.
The Mountain Lions lost, 304-321, to Erie Cathedral Prep, which got a medalist score of 70 from Pat Kelly. Each player for Cathedral Prep broke 80.
“I’m pleased with this season,” Altoona coach Erick Kozak said. “We had a good showing and improved on last year’s performance. Cathedral Prep is a solid, solid team with four scores in the 70s. I’m proud of the way we responded.”
Altoona did best Bradford, 321-345, behind a 79 from Nic Urchick and an 82 from Reece McDermitt. Ethan Katcher’s 88 rounded out the Mountain Lions’ scoring.
“We set a goal of 320 and shot 321,” Kozak said. “We were right there. Hopefully we can continue to build on winning districts two years in a row and hope we can make the final step next year.”
In other regional action, St. Joseph’s of District 6 knocked off Rockwood of District 5, 332-345, to reach the 2A PIAA team championships at Heritage Hills in York on Oct. 25. Matt Steyer’s 76 led the Wolves, and Vileska Gelpi’s 77 was tops for Rockwood.
In 3A girls, Villa Maria topped State College, 269-311, to move on to states.
