Huntingon man makes 2 holes-in-one in 1 round

Mike Dore’s round of golf Tuesday morning at Huntingdon Country Club started out like so many others had before. By the end of the day, however, the Huntingdon-native accomplished one of the rarest feats in golf — scoring two holes-in-one during the same round of golf!

The 72-year old Dore used a pitching wedge to hole-out on Huntingdon’s 100-yard, par-3 eighth hole while playing with fellow members Dave Martin, Glenn Young and Ed Gargula. Jim Lakso joined the group on the back-nine in time to watch Dore score yet another ace — this time using a 4-hybrid on the 142-yard, twelfth hole.

“I’ve been playing golf for 61 years and never had a hole-in-one”, Dore said. “I couldn’t believe I scored two on the same day.”

Playing partner Glenn Young, of James Creek, has known Dore for many years.

We were all excited on the eighth hole when Mike’s shot rolled into the hole,” Young said. “The shot on 12 was a little different. We knew he hit a good shot but didn’t know it went in until we got to the green. Jim Lakso looked in the hole – and found it! It was amazing, two in the same day.

According to the National Hole-in-One Registry, the odds of holing out twice in one round are 67 million to 1, about 10 times more difficult than winning a million-dollar Powerball lottery. Although official records are not kept, the achievement is extremely rare. Former Pittsburgh Pirate Steve Blass made national news when he accomplished the feat at the Greensburg Country Club in 2009.

Dore grew up next door to Huntingdon Country Club and played occasionally as a youngster. After college, he spent the early years of his career near Pittsburgh, working for Westinghouse Electric before returning home to help run the family business – Dore’s Shoe Store in downtown Huntingdon.

Having been retired for the past several years, Dore has been able to spend more time on the golf course. The additional playing time is reflected in his fine scoring of late. While holing-out two aces on Tuesday, Dore also accomplished another difficult feat. His 2-under par, 72 also bettered his ‘age’ by three shots.

Word of his amazing achievement spread fast among local golfing circles, but Dore remained his typical humble self.

“There’s a lot of luck involved in the game of golf”, Dore said. “I just happened to use all of my luck in one day.”
