Hackenberg has rough night for Jets

DETROIT — Matthew Stafford threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones in the second quarter, and the Detroit Lions shut down Christian Hackenberg and the New York Jets 16-6 in a preseason game Saturday night.

After losing defensive lineman Kerry Hyder to an Achilles tendon injury in their preseason opener at Indianapolis, the Lions were still able to pressure Hackenberg early on. The Jets managed only 3 yards of offense in the first quarter and just two first downs in the first half.

Jets quarterback Josh McCown sat out this game, but Hackenberg did little to impress in his absence. Hackenberg was 2 of 6 for 14 yards, was sacked twice and fumbled once when hit hard on the first series of the game.

Stafford went 8 of 10 for 84 yards.

Matt Prater kicked field goals of 37 and 25 yards in the first half, and his 50-yarder with 1:11 left in the fourth quarter put the Lions up 16-6.

Detroit’s depth along the defensive front is being tested because of injuries to Hyder and Ziggy Ansah, but the Lions looked fine in this game. On the very first series, Cornelius Washington came in unblocked and sacked Hackenberg, forcing a fumble that the Jets were able to recover.

Detroit’s Akeem Spence added a sack later in the first quarter. New York finished the half with minus-3 net yards passing.

With Matt Forte still recovering from a hamstring injury, Bilal Powell had nine carries for 32 yards for the Jets.

Stafford was fairly sharp for the Lions, but they managed only one touchdown. Jones made a nice catch in the back corner of the end zone and held on amid tight coverage from Morris Claiborne to put Detroit up 10-0.

Ross Martin made field goals of 31 and 28 yards in the fourth quarter for the Jets, but he missed from 56 in the third.

The Jets went with Bryce Petty in the second half, and he completed 15 of 24 for 160 yards with an interception in relief of Hackenberg.

Lynch sits for anthem

OAKLAND, Calif. — Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch once again sat during the national anthem.

Lynch sat on the bench Saturday night while the anthem was played before Oakland’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. Lynch also sat last week and told coach Jack Del Rio he has done that throughout his career. Lynch has not publicly said why he is sitting for the anthem.

Raiders rookie safety Shalom Luani also kneeled during part of the anthem, while star quarterback Derek Carr stood with his arm around teammate Khalil Mack.

Rams linebacker Robert Quinn, who is not in uniform for the game, also stood with his fist raised.

Jags’ QB battle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Marrone isn’t quite ready to name Chad Henne his starting quarterback. Or Blake Bortles, for that matter.

Marrone says Saturday he wants to “see how this thing goes” over the next few days before deciding who will start against the Carolina Panthers in a preseason game Thursday night.

Marrone opened up the team’s quarterback competition after another inconsistent performance from Bortles, the third overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Bortles was 8 of 13 for 65 yards in a loss to Tampa Bay. All four of Bortles’ drives ended with punts. Bortles has led the offense to three points in six possessions in the preseason.
