Claysburg moves on in slugfest

BROCKWAY — All it took was a little time and some patience for the Claysburg-Kimmel High School softball team to notch an 11-5 win over Coudersport in the opening round of the PIAA Class 1A playoffs Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (16-7) not only waited through a one-day delay to play Coudersport but also had to show just a wee bit more patience after a late start and an early deficit.

But it was apparent after just one time through the lineup that it was only a matter of time before Claysburg opened up on Coudersport starter Madison Smith.

In the end, the Bulldogs got to Smith for four runs and seven hits in just three innings while hitting up reliever Shaelyn Black for seven more runs on six hits.

Three of their 13 hits went for extra bases.

The four runs the Lady Bulldogs picked up off Smith all came in the top of the third and helped Claysburg turn a one-run deficit into a lead that it never relinquished.

“We have a bunch of girls with a lot of experience that adjust well to pitching,” Claysburg coach Mike Barbarini said. “Not seeing a team before you come in can mean not really knowing what (to expect). But we had a scouting report that said they threw 50-52 miles-an-hour, so that’s what we were working on most of the week.”

Keyara Morgan and Emily Claar led the way with three hits each while Mikalynn Bauman, Courtney Garver and Justinna Brown all had two. Garver and Brown both doubled while Morgan added a triple.

Morgan scored all three times that she reached base while Mikalynn Bauman and Mikenlee Bauman both crossed the plate twice.

Claysburg was also helped along by nine walks and three Coudersport errors.

The Bulldogs had built a 6-1 cushion heading into the bottom of the fourth before a steady rain started to fall.

And, with it, so did some of Claysburg’s advantage as the Lady Falcons started to get to pitcher Courtney Garver for four runs over the fourth and fifth innings.

Prior to that, Garver had been doing a good job against the Coudersport bats, limiting them to just one run on five hits.

“When it started to rain I think that everybody was just trying to throw strikes,” Barbarini said. “(Garver’s) back started to hurt her a little so she wasn’t throwing as hard as she usually does and they started to get the bat on the ball pretty well.”

One of those was a two-run homer from Black, who led Coudersport with three hits, in the fifth that gave the Lady Falcons a little bit of bounce.

“We have four girls that can just crush the ball,” Coudersport head coach Dan Counts said. “That one seemed to get us right back in it but then we had a couple miscues and (Claysburg) had some very good situation ball by them allowed them to manufacture some runs off it.

“But, when you get to this point of the season, there aren’t any easy opponents.”

The four runs by Coudersport ultimately didn’t make much of an impact as the Bulldogs put up five of their own over the same span while adding a final pair in the top of the seventh to seal things up.

One of the reasons Claysburg was able to outpace the Lady Falcons was its ability to take advantage on the bases.

The Bulldogs not only swiped a handful of bases but also kept the pressure on, forcing numerous wild pitches to keep runners moving into scoring position.

The win now sends Claysburg on to face WPIAL champion West Greene, a 10-0 winner against Shanksville-Stonycreek, in the quarterfinals Thursday at a site and time to be determined.
