State College’s Vanden, Wherley advance

It will be an all-State College final in the District 6 Class 3A Singles Tennis Championships.

State’s No. 1 seed Nick Vanden will face his teammate, No. 3 seed Matt Wherley, in the final at 4:30 p.m. today at State College High School.

Wherley beat second seed Rami Alkhafaji of Hollidaysburg, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in the semifinals on Wednesday at the Leopold Rec Center courts, and Vanden topped No. 4 seed Kyle Good of Altoona, 6-3, 6-0.

The Class 2A final will also be held today. No. 2 seed Ryne Talko of Bishop Guilfoyle faces top seed Adam Kush of Westmont Hilltop at 3 p.m. at the Leopold courts.

Bedford still unbeaten

HUNTINGDON — Bedford swept all five singles matches and claimed one doubles match in a 6-1 boys tennis win over Huntingdon.

Jess Hampton, Caleb Beidle, Willie Bonn, Lance Dague and Joey Windows came through with singles wins for the 17-0 Bisons, while the team of Luke Dague and Zach Kachman earned a victory. The Bearcats team of Bruce Perow and Pierce Hunter-Kysor came out on top of the No. 2 doubles match.

SIDMAN — Bishop Guilfoyle defeated Forest Hills, 4-1, after Ryne Talko, Vincent D’Andrea and Matt Unpingco swept the singles competition in tennis.

Nick Rasmussen and Nick Schmid won at No. 1 doubles.

The team of Devon Reed and Riley Gresko clinched the match with a victory at No. 2 doubles for the Titans.

Guilfoyle prevails

The Bishop Guilfoyle boys volleyball team took sole possession of first place in the Mid-State League with a 21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 win over Forest Hills at the Pleasant Valley gymnasum behind 17 kills from Michael Burke and 15 kills from Charles Patterson.

Burke also had 11 digs and five blocks, while Tyler Rumbaugh collected 11 kills, Mike Yahner made 21 digs, and Vincent Good registered 44 assists, 11 service points and three aces.
