Marauders lose in semifinals

MANCHESTER — The Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic high school boys volleyball team finished 19th out of 40 teams in the Northeastern Bobcat Invitational, losing in the Silver Bracket semifinals Saturday afternoon.

In the morning pool, BG defeated Nazareth, 30-25 before losing to Lower Dauphin, 30-25, Penn Ridge, 30-23 and Dallastown, 30-24.

The Marauders were fourth in the morning pool and defeated Dover, 30-23, in the crossover before losing to Central York, 17-15, 15-12.

BG defeated Neshaminy in the Silver playoffs, 27-25 and Holy Redeemer, 25-15. The Marauders were eliminated by Lower Dauphin, 25-21.

Charles Patterson had 45 kills and five blocks. Michael Burke had seven blocks and 18 digs. Vincent Good added 23 service points, 94 assists and 23 digs, and Michael Yahner recorded 37 digs.

Altoona ninth

DERRY — The Altoona boys volleyball team competed at the Derry Invitational where the Mountain Lions posted a 4-6 record and finished ninth out of 16 teams in high school action.

Altoona went 1-2 in morning pool play, beating Penn Hills (25-21) while losing to Montour (25-22) and Penn Trafford (25-20). In afternoon pool play, Altoona beat Deer Lakes (25-15, 25-20), split with Forest Hills (25-20, 18-25) and lost to Norwin (25-17, 25-11).

In the playoffs, Fox Chapel beat Altoona (25-16).

Phil Swartz led Altoona with 43 kills and 19 digs to go with Dalton Keller’s 12 kills and 19 digs. Zach Gibbons added 18 digs while Masen Nartatez contributed 67 assists.

CC wins tourney

GALLITZIN — The Central Cambria Black team won the Penn Cambria Junior High Volleyball Tournament by defeating Forest Hills in the championship match.

Central Cambria topped North Star in the semifinals, and Forest Hills edged Bishop Guilfoyle, 25-19.

Bishop Guilfoyle finished pool play with a 5-3 record with sweeps over Central Cambria Red (25-19, 25-16) and Bishop Carroll (25-22, 25-21), split with North Star (18-25, 25-23) and lost to Forest Hills (25-12, 25-16). BG downed Penn Cambria in the quarterfinals, 25-18.

Teresa Haigh led BG with 30 kills. Other offensive leaders for BG were Emily Murgas (31 service points and 20 assists), Rachel Nosek (20 points and 17 assists), Amelia Partner (15 points) and Jaedyn Montler (18 digs).

ICC picks stars

A total 14 area wrestlers were recently named to the Inter-County Conference all-star wrestling team.

Moshannon Valley tallied five wrestlers, with Larry Brown (PIAA fifth-place finisher), Alex Richner (PIAA qualifier), Joe Ball (Regional qualifier), Clayton Stewart (Regional qualifier), and Jon Dale (PIAA qualifier) all being named.

Representing Everett were Garret Cornell (PIAA qualifier), Wes Graham (Regional qualifier), Liam Flaherty (PIAA qualifier), Gavin Wills (PIAA qualifier) and Kyle Peterson (PIAA qualifier).

Rounding out the group were Zach Clark (Regional qualifier) and Alex Fouse (Regional qualifier) from Northern Bedford, and Issac Krause (Regional qualifier) and Matt Yeckley (Regional qualifier) from Glendale.
