Tigers open up with win

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Hollidaysburg boys tennis team opened its season on Tuesday with a 4-1 win over North Allegheny in high school action.

The Golden Tigers got singles wins from Rami Alkhafaji and Rohan Gupta, to go with doubles victories from the teams of Anthony Menard and Nick Viduya along with Will Tyndall and David Auerbeck.

North Allegheny fell to 1-1.

SFU schedule out

LORETTO — The Saint Francis football team announced its 2017 schedule.

The Red Flash, led by coach Chris Villarrial, will look to repeat as NEC champions after winning their first ever NEC title and making their first ever FCS Playoffs appearance in 2016.

Saint Francis posted a 7-5 record last season, recording back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1991-92. SFU went 5-1 in NEC play and 4-0 at home, extending its home win streak to nine games.

The 2017 schedule will feature five home games, including three straight to start the season. In the non-conference portion, SFU will host an in-state rival and a CAA team, while traveling for games against two Big South opponents and an Ohio Valley team.

The schedule includes: Sept. 2 — Lock Haven; Sept. 9 — Wagner; Sept. 16 — Towson; Sept. 23 — at Liberty; Oct. 7 — at Presbyterian; Oct. 14 — at Bryant; Oct. 21 — at Duquesne; Oct. 28 — Robert Morris; Nov. 4 — at Central Connecticut State; Nov. 11 — Sacred Heart; and Nov. 18 — at Eastern Kentucky.

n Saint Francis senior Tony Nicotra was named EIVA Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in a five-set victory against California Baptist last Saturday.

n Saint Francis women’s tennis freshman Lucia Seigford was named NEC Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, announced by the conference. The SFU rookie helped the Red Flash to two wins this week, 6-1 over Niagara and 5-2 over Mount St. Mary’s.

n A pair of Penn State Altoona men’s volleyball players swept the North Eastern Athletic Conference’s weekly awards in the sport, as the league announced its Players of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. Named the NEAC Player of the Week was sophomore outside hitter Bradley Colditz, and selected as the NEAC Defensive Player of the Week was sophomore libero Waldemar Rivera-Berrios. Bradley Colditz was also selected the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Week.

n Penn State gymnastics senior Leroy Clarke Jr. was named the College Gymnastics Association Gymnast of the Week as announced by the CGA Tuesday.

Ultimate Detailing won the U13 Summitt Athletic Club Indoor Soccer League championship. The sponsor’s name was omitted from a photo in Monday’s Mirror.
