SFU nets historic victory

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — The Saint Francis women used spirited defense and a balanced offense to knock off the Campbell Camels, 79-68, on Thursday night in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational.

The victory is the first postseason win for the Red Flash in program history and the first postseason win for the Northeast Conference in women’s basketball history. The victory moved SFU into the second round of the WBI where it will host Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The Red Flash forced 26 Camel turnovers, leading to 29 points in the victory. The Flash had 17 steals in Thursday’s win, led by Ace Harrison’s six and Samiah Bethel’s five.

Offensively, Maya Wynn went for 20 points and tied a WBI record with six made threes. Jessica Kovatch matched Wynn with 20 while Katie Reese had 14 and Bethel had 12 to place four players in double figures.

The win moved SFU to 17-14 on the season, while Campbell’s campaign ended at 21-10.
