Comeback complete for Mustangs

CASTLE SHANNON — The Mid-State Mustangs 18U team rebounded from an 0-2 start to capture the 2017 Mid-American Hockey Association Western Penn state championship for the 12th time last weekend at Ice Castle Ice Rink.

The Mustangs defeated the South Hills Panthers in Sunday’s Tier II Midget 18U championship game, 4-0.

Earlier, the Mustangs fell to the Beaver County Badgers, 4-1, and the Pittsburgh Predators, 3-0. But, seeded fifth, they knocked off Beaver County, 5-3, in the quarterfinals and the Pittsburgh Vipers, 3-1, in the semifinals before blanking South Hills.

The Mustangs will now compete in the USA Hockey Youth Tier II 18U National Championships in Lansing, Mich., beginning April 7.

The Mustangs, coached by Glen Barbosa, will be trying for their fourth national championship.

Ritchey on winning team

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Central High School graduate Brandon Ritchey is a member of the New York University men’s ice hockey team that recently won the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division II national championship.

The Violets (28-4-1) defeated Liberty University, 4-3, in the championship game on Sunday at the Ice Haus. They won their second championship in three years.

Ritchey, who played for Hollidaysburg in high school, had seven goals and six assists in 26 games this season as a freshman forward.

NYU will transition to Division I play next year.
