Red Flash win sixth NEC road game

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Saint Francis men’s basketball team placed five players in double figures as it earned an 80-71 win at Central Connecticut State on Thursday at Detrick Gymnasium.

The Red Flash, who trailed 37-31 at the half, outscored CCSU 49-34 in the second half. SFU improved to 12-14 overall and 9-6 in NEC play, while CCSU dropped to 5-21 overall and 3-12 in conference play.

With the win, the Red Flash picked up their sixth NEC road win this year. That sets a new program record, topping five wins by the 1990-91, 1993-94 and 1997-98 teams. SFU is now 6-2 in NEC road games this year with one more regular season opportunity at Bryant on Saturday.

The Red Flash had five players score in double-figures, led by freshman Keith Braxton’s 19 points. Braxton hit 6-of-7 shots from the floor and hit all six attempts from the free-throw line to go with eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Sophomore Jamaal King had 14 points and added five assists. Fellow sophomore Josh Nebo had 13 points, four rebounds and two blocks, while senior Georgios Angelou scored all 11 of his points in the second half. Sophomore Isaiah Blackmon added 10 points.

Saint Francis shot 58 percent in the game, making 30-of-52 shots, including 9-of-19 from deep, and went 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. SFU shot 48 percent in the first half and 68 percent in the second half. The Flash scored 37 of their 80 points in the paint.

The Blue Devils were led by Khalen Cumberlander’s 25 points, on 9-of-15 shooting including four 3s, four rebounds and four assists. Tyson Batiste had 17 points off the bench, hitting five 3s, while Tafari Whittingham contributed 13 points and seven boards off the bench.
