Tigers’ Wood misses out on medal by stroke

High School Digest

YORK — Hollidaysburg’s Isaac Wood improved on his first-day score by five strokes and shot a 75 on the final day of the PIAA 3A high school golf championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort.

Wood’s two-day total of 155 was good enough to rank him 11th in a field of 36 golfers. Wood missed a top-10 medal by just one stroke.

The Hollidaysburg senior finished his career with a pair of District 6 3A championships and qualified for the PIAA championships for the first time this season.

In 2A, Everett’s Zach Robertson shot a 92 after a first-day 82 and slipped to 30th place. Robertson won a District 5 title this year and was the only area golfer to advance to states in 2A from the PIAA Western Regional.

Central Cambria senior Lauren Stevens finished 18th in the 2A girls field and improved on her first day score by seven strokes. The two-time District 6 2A champion finished with a two-day total of 205 after qualifying for states for the first time.

The team championships will be held today, and Philipsburg-Osceola will be in the 2A boys field.

Bedford loses at states

WEXFORD –The Bedford girls tennis season came to and end as it was swept by WPIAL champion Beaver, 5-0, in a PIAA Class 2A first round match Tuesday at Pure Athletic.

“Beaver is a well-rounded team,” Bedford coach Debra Rose said. “They returned all of their starters from last year, but we were very competitive in most of the matches.”

Bedford will lose three senior starters, but Rose believes the match provided the underclassmen with a valuable understanding of what play is like at the state level.

“It was a great experience for the underclassmen who never saw what state competition was like prior to this match,” Rose said. “We will miss our number one senior in Allison (Shuke), Jordan (Ruhlman) at our number three singles  position and Lauren (Ooghe) on our number one doubles team.”

SINGLES: 1, Taylor, B, def. A. Shuke, 6-2, 6-1; 2, Bridges, B, def. E. Ruhlman, 6-1, 6-0; 3, Lewis, B, def. J. Ruhlman, 6-1, 6-2.
