Huskies’ season now over

WINGATE — You couldn’t have asked for more out of a playoff game with the matchup between Bellefonte and Bishop Carroll Tuesday night in the District 6 3A boys soccer semifinals.

It was a hard fought game that saw leads change multiple times, and it was obvious that the Red Raiders and Huskies wanted to advance to the title game badly, as neither team had a huge edge throughout.

However, in the end, it was Bellefonte advancing to next week’s championship game, thanks to a 5-4 victory at Bald Eagle Area High School.

The Huskies’ season ended at 10-9.

“The effort ws there but sometimes the bounce of the ball doesn’t go your way,” Bishop Carroll coach Brian Maykovich said. “I was happy with our kids’ effort. Anytime they were down, they would bounce right back for us.”

The Red Raiders outshot the Huskies, 26-11, and controlled the ball the majority of the game, but Bishop Carroll did enough to stay close, thanks to the Huskies’ Alex Colhime and Selvin Maykovich, who each scored two goals.

“We knew coming in they had a high powered offense, so we knew defensively we had to match up with that. Defense, we kind of let some things slide tonight,” Bellefonte coach Scott Martz said. “We played better on defense, but offensively I knew we could score with them, and these guys did. They stepped up when we needed to step up, and they put it in the back of the net for us to get a 5-4 win. Bishop Carroll is a good team, I’m happy with the win tonight.”

Bellefonte improved to 13-4-2 in a game that got physical on more than one occasion.

“I thought Bishop Carroll was very physical. We played in the past two years, I don’t remember them being as physical. They took it to us physically, they were more physical than we were. I thought 50/50 balls, we won a few more of those, but physical wise? They outplayed us in that part of the game,” said Martz.

There were three different moments in the game where breakaway goals by Bellefonte were taken away due to offsides calls.

“It was 1-1 at halftime, and we even had a 1-0 lead so I was happy,” Maykovich said. “I knew there would be more offense coming, but I thought we held our own.”

Daniel Simmons led Bellefonte with two goals. The winners also got goals from Marco Nazih and Alex Korner. Bellefonte also scored on an own goal.

“They managed to put one more in goal than we did,” Maykovich said. “We had ample opportunities. They just got one more than us. I am looking forward to playing again with this team next year.”
