Haugh’s goal lifts Altoona over BG

Paris Haugh scored the only goal of the game for the Altoona girls soccer team in a 1-0 win over Bishop Guilfoyle at the Altoona Intramural Field Saturday.

The goal, which came in the second half, was assisted by Mykenah Massar. Altoona goalie Alicia Carper got the shutout as the Lady Lions improved to 5-7-1. The Lady Marauders fell to 10-3-1.

Lions cruise

Alex Berardinelli scored two goals to lead the Altoona boys soccer team to a 4-0 win over Philipsburg-Osceola in high school action at Mansion Park.

Altoona, now 9-4, scored all four goals in the second half. Matt Cowan and Evan Cardoza each added a goal. Jake Deterline got the shutout for Altoona. He finished with two saves.

The Mounties fell to 3-7.

Spikers finish as runner-up

POTTSVILLE – The Altoona Lady Spikers high school volleyball team competed in the Pottsville Martz Madness tournament, falling in the championship to Garden Spot, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12.

Along the way, Altoona defeated Mahonoy Area, Tamaqua, Wyoming Valley West, and host school Pottsville, all in straight sets, before defeating Berks Catholic in the semifinals.

Kylee Clawson, in addition to 23 service points and five aces on the day, reached the 1,000-dig plateau for her career, while Maddie Benton finished with 97 assists and 14 service points, putting her over the 1,000-mark in assists for her career as well.
