Football players receive NEC honors

LORETTO — Saint Francis football sophomore receiver Kamron Lewis was named NEC Offensive Player of the Week, while junior cornerback Jalen Wells was selected NEC Defensive Player of the Week for their performances in Saint Francis’ 14-10 win over Duquesne.

Lewis continued a strong sophomore season with four catches for 135 yards. The California native registered his fourth 100-yard game this season and has back-to-back 100-yard performances after going for 129 against Bryant.

On the season, Lewis has 854 yards, already the fifth-most in a season in program history. He needs just four yards to move into fourth place (Michael Caputo, 2006) for most receiving yards in a season and he needs just 32 yards to move into third (Antoine Rivera, 2007). Lewis also has 47 catches and five touchdowns.

With 854 yards this season, he ranks fourth in the FCS. He is also 10th in yards per game. Lewis leads the NEC in both categories as well as receptions per game, averaging 5.9.

Wells intercepted a pass for the second straight week. It sealed the win for Saint Francis over the Dukes. Wells added five tackles, including four solo, and broke up a pass. He had one tackle each in the first quarter and second quarter, two stops in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter.

Wells has a total of 24 tackles, including 16 solo, on the year. He now has two interceptions to go with a sack and eight pass breakups. Wells is tied for third in the NEC in both interceptions and passes defended.

Women’s basketball

Saint Francis sophomore guard Jess Kovatch was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award watch list, given annually to the nation’s top point guard.

Kovatch burst onto the scene as a freshman in the 2015-16 season, averaging 20.9 and two assists per game. The scoring guard topped the 30-point mark five times during the season last year and had 19 games of at least 20 points.

The award is in its 17th year and the selection committee consists of Basketball Hall of Famers, media members, sports information directors and coaches.

Women’s golf

The Saint Francis women’s golf team closed out its season with a seventh-place finish at the Lehigh Invitational Monday.

Taylor Krout was the top finisher for the Red Flash, shooting a final round 83 to finish in a tie for 15th overall.
