Hornets playing at Mount Aloysius

The PIAA has announced the sites and times for Monday’s first-round state baseball and softball playoff games, and only two of the five teams from the Altoona Mirror coverage area will be playing within District 6 or District 5.

District 6 Class A baseball champion Juniata Valley will be at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson for its first round game with District 5 runner-up Meyersdale at 4 p.m., the PIAA released on Friday. Meanwhile, Philipsburg-Osceola will return to the site of its District 6 Class AA softball championship win – Penn State’s Beard Field – to take on Steel Valley from District 7 at 7 p.m.

The Mirror area’s two other baseball teams still alive in the postseason will be heading toward the Pittsburgh area. Central will face perennial WPIAL power Riverside at 2 p.m. in Class AA action at Seneca Valley High School in Harmony, while 6-A runner-up Portage is slated to travel to Latrobe High School for a game with WPIAL champion Serra Catholic that also is scheduled to begin at 2.

Fresh off its District 5 Class AA softball title victory, Everett will be headed to Clarion-Limestone High School in Strattanville to meet up with Moniteau, the District 9 champion. That game will start at 3:30 p.m.

All eight finals will be played at Penn State on June 16.
