Five area players make state-wide first team
Five players from the Altoona Mirror coverage area – including two from PIAA Class AA quarterfinalist Philipsburg-Osceola – have been named to the Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association all-state first team.
Third baseman Haylee Hayward and pitcher Kam Harris represented the Lady Mounties on the top squad in double-A, where they were joined by Cambria Heights outfielder Kenzie Blake. Bellwood pitcher Taylor Shildt and Hollidaysburg shortstop Mikayla Focht were selected to the first team in Class AAA; Focht as picked as a designated player/utility player.
Everett’s Kadie Morral (designated player/utility) and Sydney Reffner (shortstop) and Heights’ Julia Pritchard (first base) made the Class AA second team. Ellie Leyo of Glendale was on the Class AA second team at second base.
Thirteen other area players received honorable mention: Bellwood’s Caroline Showalter (Class AAA, catcher) and Laycee Clark (Class AAA, shortstop); Philipsburg-Osceola’s Chelsey Henry (Class AA, outfield), Maddie Lucas (Class AA, outfield), Maggie Peck (Class AA, first base) and Kylie Thal (Class AA, catcher); Everett’s Hannah Laidig (Class AA, catcher); Cambria Heights’ Kat Cox (Class AA, third base); Northern Bedford’s Makenzie Eshelman (Class A, pitcher) and Kaity Corle (Class A, shortstop), Bishop Guilfoyle’s Brayley Lewis (Class A, shortstop); and Glendale’s Lexi Mulhollen (Class A, pitcher) and Makenzie Lukehart (Class A, outfield).
