AA seedings revealed

The District 6 Class AA Track and Field Championships are shaping up to be a big day for boys runners and girls throwers and jumpers from the Altoona Mirror coverage area.

Area boys are seeded first in 10 of the 18 events, including Central Cambria’s Bryce Descavish and Penn Cambria’s Kamryn Stoy and Jake Wyland in two individual running events apiece. Ten of the 18 girls top seeds are local entries, among them all three jumping events – headlined by two-time PIAA gold medalist Erika Voyzey of Tyrone – two of the three jumping events and the pole vault.

The district released its performance sheets on Sunday night, based on times, heights and distances achieved earlier this spring. The meet at Mansion Park begins at 3:30 p.m. with track trials and pole vault competition. The top three finishers in each event along with any others achieving a predetermined standard on Tuesday qualify for the PIAA championship meet in their event.

Stoy has met the state-qualifying standard in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles to garner the top seed in both those events, while Descavish, a 2015 state medalist, has done the same in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs.

Wyland, meanwhile, has accomplished it to become the No. 1 seed in the 100 meters to go along with being the top seed in the 200 dash.

Central’s Justin Helsel is poised for a big meet, as well. He’s part of the top-ranked 400 relay team in addition to being co-top seed in the long jump and third seed in the 100.

Central Cambria’s Mike Walwro (800) and the Central Cambria four-by-400 relay round out the area favorites.

Also this year’s high school Penn Relays gold medalist, Voyzey will have a chance to break the meet record in the high jump of 5 feet, 8 inches that she currently shares with Northern Cambria four-time state gold medal winner Janae Dunchack – Voyzey has jumped 5-11 this year to get the top seed in a field that could send several performers to the state medal stand at Shippensburg University May 27-28.

Voyzey’s also seeded third in the long jump.

Penn Cambria’s Lauren Michina has met the PIAA qualifying height of 5-4 to tie for second seed in the high jump, but she is the No. 1 seed in the triple jump. Meanwhile, Bishop Carroll’s Alyssa Martinazzi received the top seed in the long jump, and Bellwood-Antis’ Alexis Gerwert is one of three girls tied for the best height this season in the pole vault.

Returning state medalist Jadyn Tiracave of Penn Cambria holds the top spot in the javelin – defending champion Britt Krug of Bishop Carroll was not listed on the roster of competitors – and Bishop Guilfoyle’s Anna Audley is favored in the discus.

Central Cambria’s Lexi Peterman headlines the area girls in track events. She’s the top seed in the 800 run and is part of the No. 1-rated 1600 and 3200 relays.

Bishop Guilfoyle’s Alyssa McGhee is seeded second in both the 100 and 200. Former Huntingdon Area distance runner Lucia Person, now at Saint Joseph’s in Centre County, is the top seed in the mile and two-mile runs.

This year, admission will be charged for the track championship. Adult admission will be $5. Student admission with ID will be $2.
