Red Devils look to continue strong run

Central Cambria will get the top two finishers at last year’s Class AA District 6 individual golf championship back in 2014 in champion Jeremy Eckenrode and runner-up Dom Stevens, but it will have competition to even win its league.

The Red Devils, winners of the past three District 6 championships, will be challenged by Penn Cambria and top returnee and Mirror all-star second teamer Ian Dunmyer, who was just a stroke behind Eckenrode after the first day of districts last year.

The Panthers went 9-1 a year ago and have most of their team back – a team that coach Chris Wilk said didn’t reach its goals last year.

“This is the most experienced team with several players with multiple years of match, tournament and postseason experience,” Wilk said. “All players show determination to improve. Seniors are more focused trying to make their last year a memorable one.”

The Devils also have plenty back including the only returning first-team Mirror all-stars. Eckenrode and Stevens both qualified for the PIAA championships a year ago as individuals, and Stevens medaled with an eighth-place finish.

“These players are talented, dedicated and work very hard on their games,” Central Cambria coach Tom Aurandt said. “I truly expect them to have a successful season.”

Kourtney Mortimer, who won the District 5 girls individual title two years ago, will return for her senior year at Bedford, and Penn Cambria’s Madison Krug will be back after qualifying for regionals a year ago. Both girls made the Mirror’s second-team as juniors.

Fellow second-teamers Altoona’s Trentin Martin and Hollidaysburg’s Jesse Ottaway will be back to lead their respective squads.

The following is a capsulized preview of each team in the Mirror’s coverage area.

Strengths: “This year’s squad has a good deal of varsity experience even though we are relatively young. Our top six should be solid. The majority of them have been playing a lot of golf this summer. They have had some good showings in the local junior events which I hope will translate into a positive season for our team this year.”

Concerns: “Our players need to develop better consistency and improve on their ability to score. They have to improve their course management and develop some confidence. They have tons of potential, now they just need to realize their potential and come through under pressure.”

Overall outlook: “As always, we hope to be competitive in every match and peak at the right time for sectionals and districts. Our goal is to get a couple individuals through to districts and qualify the team as well.”
