Peters’ bucket lifts Grace Bible Church
Cupples Contracting wanted the last shot.
It was Grace Bible Church that got, and made it.
On a buzzer-beating layup by Brian Peters, Grace Bible Church captured the Division 5 CBRC Mansion Park Men’s Summer Basketball League championship, 39-37, on a chilly Monday evening at Mansion Park.
“We played well as a team,” Peters said. “We played real good defense, and we got the steal. We got the breakaway, and we were able to capitalize to get the win in the final seconds.”
With 46 seconds left and the game tied at 37, Cupples Contracting called for timeout. As the teams headed into huddle, Grace Bible Church’s Jonah Salyards overheard a Cupples player say the team would hold for the last shot.
Out of the timeout, it appeared Cupples was planning to do just that as it didn’t begin an offensive play until about 10 seconds remained.
That was when Cupples’ Matt Gray took the ball to the left of the hoop but stumbled and lost control of the ball.
Salyards, who was the immediate defender, picked it up, threw it to a cutting Chris Foster, who subsequently hit a wide-open Peters for the game-winning layup as time expired.
“He kind of fumbled the ball. I was just trying to grab it as quick as I could,” Salyards, who scored a game-high 13, said. “I saw Chris running diagonal, looking for the outlet. I snuck it in there. The guy was closing in on him fast. I thought it was going to get stolen there. “
Cupples Contracting’s Kareem Mitchell said holding the ball was the plan and figured Grace Bible Church wouldn’t foul but put Gray in just in case.
“We figured we could get the last shot if we held the ball the longest,” Mitchell, who had a team-leading 12 points, said. “If they would have fouled him, we would have won, because we would have been able to end the game with two free throws. Matt (Gray) is a pretty good free-throw shooter.”
However, Grace Bible Church didn’t apply pressure until Gray began the cut.
“We were just hoping to extend our defense and play tough defense,” Salyards said. “It played out how we wanted it to play.”
The layup was Peters’ fifth and sixth points of the night. Foster had eight, and Matt Winquist had eight for the victors.
