Three area athletes head to nationals

HUMBLE, Texas – Three Mountain Top Track and Field Club members are set to participate in the USATF National Junior Olympics championships later this week at Turner Field near Houston.

Returning national champ Mike Biddle of Williamsburg, Cresson’s Jadyn Tiracave and Coupon’s Conner Karabinos will all compete in the javelin competition. They all qualified for nationals with strong performances at the Region 2 meet in Galloway, N.J., on July 10-13.

Biddle, a senior at Williamsburg High School, will throw the javelin on Saturday in the 17-18 male division. He won regionals with a throw of 191 feet, 5 inches earlier this month and won nationals last year in the 15-16 division.

Tiracave, a sophomore at Penn Cambria High School, will also compete on Saturday in the 15-16 female division. She won regionals with a personal-best throw of 133 feet, 3 inches.

Karabinos will throw on Thursday in the 11-12 male division. He placed second at regionals with a throw of 111-3, but threw 120 feet in the previous meet, the Three Rivers Association championships.

The Mountain Top Club, based in Cresson and coached by Lois Smith, also qualified two other athletes to nationals, but both opted to not attend. Bishop Carroll Catholic High School sophomore Britt Krug was third at regionals in the 15-16 female javelin competition with a 122-8, and Bishop Carroll senior Matt Karlheim was second in the decathlon and fifth in the long jump (21-0) in the 17-18 male division.

Mountain Top took approximately 60 athletes to the Three Rivers Association meet at California, Pa., in June, and 14 of them then competed at regionals.
