Central to play in Punxsutawney

The undefeated Central baseball team and the District 6 runner-up Claysburg-Kimmel softball team will be among four area spring sports squads venturing out of the region for PIAA quarterfinal round playoff games on Thursday.

The Scarlet Dragons are headed to Rick Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney for a 4 p.m. first pitch against Franklin, which beat Seton La Salle, 7-2, Tuesday in Class AA baseball action. In the same bracket, Bedford plays earlier in the day at Burkett Park near McKees Rocks on the southwest side of Pittsburgh, where the Bisons face Northwestern at 1 p.m.

In Class A baseball action, Juniata Valley will try to knock off another district champion when it heads to Greene Township Park in Scotland to take on Schuylkill Haven of District 11. That game is slated to start at 3:30.

The Lady Bulldogs, meanwhile, trek to Slippery Rock University for their Class A second round softball matchup with Iroquois at 3 p.m.

Only the Philipsburg-Osceola softball team will remain within its home district. The Lady Mounties will be in action at Saint Francis University at 4 p.m. They’ll play Beaver in a Class AA game.
