PC, C-K own top two seeds, respectively

From Mirror reports

Claysburg-Kimmel’s bid to make the state softball tournament for the sixth year in a row will begin as the second seed in the District 6 Class A tournament.

The district released the seeds and brackets for this year’s tourney on Monday afternoon for Class AA and A – Class AAAA and AAA will come out later this week. Philipsburg-Osceola, which is shooting for its fifth consecutive trip to the PIAA tournament, is second in Class AA to Penn Cambria, which was a perfect 18-0 at the deadline to enter the postseason.

Claysburg finished just behind Conemaugh Valley in the 6-A rankings. As a result, the Lady Bulldogs, who get a first-round bye, will host Purchase Line in the quarterfinals on May 19 for the right to play third-seeded Bishop Carroll or Homer-Center in the semis; that also would be at Claysburg if C-K was in that game.

Portage is the fourth seed and opens at home against Southern Huntingdon.

Fifteen teams, including sixth from the Altoona Mirror coverage area, are part of the 6-AA field.

Penn Cambria got the top seed by a little more than a tenth of a percentage point over P-O in the district’s rating system. That means the Lady Panthers are the only team in the 6-AA bracket with a first-round bye. All the other teams will be in action on Thursday.

As a result, Penn Cambria will host either Westmont Hilltop or Juniata on May 19. With a win there, the Lady Panthers are likely to face either fifth-seeded Bellwood-Antis or fourth-ranked Bald Eagle Area on May 22, also in Cresson.

Philipsburg-Osceola opens on Thursday by entertaining Central Cambria. A win there could set the stage for a quarterfinal showdown with a Mountain League rival, hard-hitting Central, next Monday.

As the 14th seed, Cambria Heights will be at Marion Center in the first round on Thursday. All four finals will be held on May 28 at Penn State.
