Mustangs win first

WAYNE, N.J. – The U18 Mid-State Mustangs won their first game at the National Championships Wednesday morning in hockey. The Mustangs took on the Littleton Hawks, the Colorado state champions, and defeated them, 5-2.

After a scoreless first period, the Hawks opened the scoring 1:40 into the second period. Jared Karas tied the game for the Mustangs with a unassisted power play goal with 4:21 remaining in the second frame. Just 17 seconds later Jason Edsall put the Mustangs in the lead for good with an even-strength goal, with an assist from Tyler Shima.

Mid-State took a twogoal lead with 7:58 left in the third period when Sam Lafferty ripped a slap shot past the goaltender that was set up by a nice pass from Adam Badorrek. Badorrek then added a shorthanded goal just 1:54 seconds later. Lafferty scored an open net goal to close out the victory.

“The Hawks are a very physical, very fast team,” Mustangs coach Dave Weaver said. “After we weathered the storm early in the game, we were able to settle down and play our style of hockey.”

The Mustangs were outshot 41-31 in the game.

“Our goalie, Jake Kahler, was outstanding today. To stop 39 of 41 shots is the difference in the game,” Weaver said.

The Mustangs game against Team Ohio on Wednesday evening was not reported to the Mirror.
