Mount athletes earn recognition

CRESSON – Mount Aloysius College had many of its student-athletes honored during NCAA Division III Week for their contributions of intellect, character and community service.

Three Mountie winter athletes earned spots on the AMCC Sportsmanship Team – women’s basketball player Alexis Restori, men’s basketball player Jake Wyatt and Courtney Burkett of Roaring Spring, a member of the women’s bowling team. These athletes consistently demonstrated a high level of ethical conduct, respect and fair play in both practice and competition, whether on the sidelines or as an active competitor.

The Mount Aloysius College golf team was honored with a Peak Performance award, as the team earned the highest GPA among their peer AMCC golfers. Members of the Mountie golf team include Chris Arena, Daniela Battisti, Rhett Leech, Dylan Link (Bishop Carroll), Zach Morgan (Central Cambria), Joe Nazareck (Bishop Carroll), Andy Newgard (Bellwood-Antis) and Autumn Nichol.

Mount Aloysius had 80 student-athletes named to the AMCC Academic All-Conference Team, almost 50 percent of the entire student athlete population at the College. To earn this honor of Academic All-Conference, student-athletes needed to achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher as of fall semester 2013.

Among those Mounties honored, 12 were named to the Chi Alpha Sigma Student-Athlete Honor Society. These student-athletes were women’s basketball player Morgan Brosnihan, men’s baseball pitcher and AMCC Preseason Pitcher of the Year Derrick Capiak, men’s basketball players Nolan Doyle, Aaron Patrick, Tanner Thomas, women’s soccer captain Elizabeth Josephson (Philipsburg-Osceola), golf star and All-AMCC Performer Link, men’s soccer captain Austin Old, women’s basketball and softball star Lindsy Sammarco (Bishop Carroll), men’s baseball player Seth Shaffer (Chestnut Ridge), women’s tennis captain Laura Stahli and AMCC Preseason Softball Player of the Year Jalisa Westover (Flinton).

Student-athletes inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Collegiate Student-Athlete Honor Society, are recognized for their academic performance, leadership and character.

The AMCC also honored student-athletes for community service. Student-athletes at Mount Aloysius together with other AMCC member institutions contributed to more than 65 community service activities. The AMCC gave a specific mention to the contingent of Mount Aloysius College students and staff who travelled to New Orleans, assisting with the on-going rebuilding efforts there.

Throughout this calendar year, Mountie athletes have reached out to the local community as well as the global community. Mount Aloysius athletes have participated in sports camps for children and hosted youth teams on campus. They have joined events such as Project Bundle Up, the Angel Tree Program and the Mercy Youth Initiative while also donating time to the community at animal shelters, Christian ministry organizations and highway cleanups.
