Tigers, P-O, C-K, Ridge look for more district titles

For District 6 Class AA champion Philipsburg-Osceola and Class AAA champ Hollidaysburg, this year is one of transition of sorts. For District 6 Class A champ Claysburg-Kimmel and District 5 winner Chestnut Ridge, the 2014 season could be more of the same.

P-O, which has won four straight district titles, reached the state semifinals last year before falling to Riverside, 2-0, but pitcher Kate Burge and catcher Carly Gonder graduated. Burge could be replaced by a rotatation, but whomever pitches will be supported by sluggers Abby Showers, Kenzie Burge and Haley Frank, all of whom were Mirror first-team all-stars.

Hollidaysburg’s Brenda Johnsonbaugh is one of five first-year head coaches, but the return of Mirror all-star pitcher Alyssa Pheasant will help the transition. Altoona, Bishop Guilfoyle, Glendale and Moshannon Valley also have new coaches.

Claysburg-Kimmel, which reached the state quarterfinals last season, has all-state and Mirror first-team pitcher Kiersten Coho, who had 155 strikeouts in 140 innings, returning from last year’s 20-4 team.

Ridge has won five straight District 5 titles, but the Lady Lions are looking for that elusive state playoff win. What helps is the return of pitcher Jennifer Carthew and four other starters from a 20-3 team.

Penn Cambria three-time Mirror all-star pitcher Kelly Yusko returns, as does Central two-time all-star third baseman Ashley Smith, Bellwood-Antis two-time all-star Jackie Finn and 2013 all-star outfielder Emily Nagle. B-A will be without graduated pitcher and Mirror first-teamer Taylor Payne.

Overall outlook: “We have high hopes of improving from where we left off last season with a lot of commitment and dedication to build this year’s team. The girls are working hard to make it into the playoffs, but yet they are mindful that you have to take it one game at a time.”

Strengths: “Any year you return experience at key spots, as we are fortunate to have this year with Kelly Yusko, Alli Reese and Katie Little anchoring the middle as our pitcher, catcher and second baseman, it’s got to be considered one of our strengths.”
