Report: Steelers sign Mitchell

According to ESPN.COM’s David Newton, Mike Mitchell, a free safety drafted in the second round by the Oakland Raiders six years ago, agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, the first day of free agency.

Mitchell, who played last season with the Carolina Panthers, said after the season he wanted to return to Carolina. The Panthers hoped to re-sign him once the free agent market slowed down if the price was right.

It never materialized as Pittsburgh, one of many teams pursuing Mitchell, reached a quick deal, signing him to a five-year $25 million contract, according to sources.

Mitchell used Twitter to thank the Panthers after the Steelers’ deal was reached.
