Mustangs outslug Blacklick

NANTY GLO – Portage used an eight-run third inning to help outlast Blacklick Valley, 17-10, in its high school softball season opener on Tuesday.

Katie Nolan had three hits for Portage, while Kaitlin Jubina drove in three runs, and Paisley Zatek brought in two.

Finn, Laycee Clark and Caroline Showalter had RBIs for Bellwood, while Taylor Shild pitched a complete game to earn the victory.

Glendale juniors beat Damsels

FLINTON – Glendale defeated Moshannon Valley, 6-3, in its season opener. Mackenzie Lukehart had eight strikeouts in the win and had two hits. Riley Gabrielson also had two hits for Glendale.


BG edges Richland

Bishop Guilfoyle defeated the cold weather and Richland, 3-2, in high school boys tennis at Mansion Park.

BG’s Jim Burke won in No. 1 singles, while teammate Nick Centar won in No. 3 singles. The BG doubles team of Dan Sullivan and Vincent D’Andrea won their No. 2 doubles match.

Central’s Dylan Appleman placed fifth at 65 pounds in the 11-12 age group at the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Tournament on Saturday in Harrisburg. His name was omitted from a story on the placewinners in Monday’s edition.
