Green prevails in final second

JOHNSTOWN – Before he wrestles, Huntingdon 132-pound senior Devon Green points skyward in honor of friend and former teammate Clay Bishop, who drowned in August of 2012 at Raystown Lake.

“He was such a hard worker,” Green said. “Every time I think about him, I just think about how hard of a worker he is, and it gives me some extra boost.”

When his Southwest Regional Class AA quarterfinal against Southmoreland’s District 7 runner-up Evan Myers went to the ultimate tiebreaker on Friday at the Cambria County War Memorial, he pointed skyward again.

Whether it was divine intervention, conditioning or just plain determination, the District 6 champion avoided being ridden out in the 30-second period by scoring a reversal with about a second left to win, 5-3, to reach the semifinals.

“It feels great, honestly,” Green said. “I’ve been working in the room, and it’s paying off. I’ve been running recently outside of practice, and I feel that’s what helped me get over the edge.”

“It was a great match,” Huntingdon coach Jon Mykut said. “He gutted it out in overtime. We put a little extra time in the practice room the last two weeks working on overtime situations just like that going to rideout. He wrestled that full 30 seconds, and he’s the type of kid that just doesn’t quit.”

It was part of a good day for the Bearcats, who also advanced Collin Glorioso (113) and Jacob Oliver (145) into the semifinals, have Jon Wagner (152), Logan Fisher (170), Matt Norris (182) and Mitchell Lauer (195) still alive in the consolations and are tied with Burrell for first place in the team standings with 41 points.

“Overall, I think we had some ups and some downs,” Mykut said, “but at the end of the day we still have seven out of nine left coming back tomorrow. I think that’s a good thing. It’s super tough competition, so we’re wrestling all right.”

Coming into the tournament, Chestnut Ridge looked like it would contend with Huntingdon and Burrell for the team title, but the Lions had a bad day overall. They moved Aaron Burkett (106), Conner Buttry (182) and Austin Buttry (285) into the semis, but only Derrick Claar (138) remains alive in the consolations.

“It was a disappointing day,” Ridge coach Greg Lazor said. “We have the Buttry boys, and Burkett wrestled real nice for us. I thought District 5 wrestled really well today, and if anything, we let it down. We should have done a little better. I wish I knew [the answers] or it wouldn’t happen three years in a row.”

The area moved 15 into the semis, which are scheduled for 11 a.m., but Bedford’s three-time regional runner-up and 2013 state runner-up Ryan Easter (132) isn’t one of them. While Green was wrestling in his nailbiter, Easter was losing to Burrell’s John Andrejcik, 2-1, in a tiebreaker on the next mat. Easter rebounded with a 9-1 win over Moshannon Valley’s Bryce Bloom in the consolations.

“Ryan got against a foe we had wrestled before at King Of The Mountain, and it was real close [4-2 Easter win],” Bedford coach Brian Creps said, “and this time Ryan just fell a little bit short. He seems to be in the right frame of mind now.”

Now Green gets Andrejcik, who beat the Bearcat, 17-10, at the the PIAA Duals.

“I threw him to his back, and then he rolled me to my back after I threw him,” Green said. “I feel it’s going to be a lot closer match.”

Bedford advanced two into the semis in Johnathan Gabriel (113) and Garrett Thomas (138), have Easter and Chance Williams (182) still alive in the consys and is in sixth in the team standings wth 27.5 points.

“I think the boys wrestled pretty well,” Creps said. “Johnathan Gabriel wrestled really well against Blackburn, and he’s really wrestling well right now, so we really like our chances with him. Garrett Thomas is also wrestling with a lot of confidence. He was pretty dominant in his quarterfinal match too.”

Cambria Heights’ Joe Davis (126) and Levi Niebauer (160), both of whom were sixth-placers last year, Penn Cambria’s Nolan Link (106), Central Cambria’s Max Murin (106), Northern Bedford’s Lucas Kolinchak (170), Tyrone’s Jared Beckwith (195) and Everett’s Devin Reed (285) also reached the semifinals.

Three of the four 106-pound semifinalists are area wrestlers, which means Burkett (35-3) and Link (28-7) will clash in the first bout today. Burkett had a pin in his only bout, while Link had a pin and a 4-3 decision over Bentworth’s Hunter Neely. Murin (33-0) rolled into the semis with two pins and faces South Park’s Dallas Bulsak (25-4) for a chance to wrestle in the finals.

“It ought to be a fun match,” Lazor said. “They know each other for quite some time. They’re both entertaining wrestlers, and I think it ought to be a real exciting go.”

“We’ve got to have our A game tomorrow,” PC coach Todd Niebauer said. “Burkett is a tough, tough match. It’s two solid wrestlers.”

The expected semifinal between Huntingdon freshman Jacob Oliver and Chestnut Ridge’s Trent Crouse wasn’t meant to be. Oliver went 2-0 with a pin and a 5-2 decision over Meyersdale’s Seth Deist, but Crouse dropped a 5-3 overtime decision to Burrell’s Corey Falleroni, and then he was eliminated with a 7-2 loss to Richland’s Nick Naglic.

“Jake’s been doing it all year long,” Mykut said. “He has a tough customer in the semis with the kid from Burrell. We had a close match with him down at team states [4-2 overtime win for Oliver]. Jake is looking forward to it, and we’ll see how it goes.”

Davis eked out a 3-1 win over Bentworth’s Matt Vickless in his first bout and then beat Northern Bedford’s Jared Helsley, 7-2, scoring three takedowns, to get a semifinal berth against Jefferson Morgan’s 38-0 John Demaske, who beat Central Cambria’s Tom Opdenhoff, 3-0.

“In my first match, I was a little sluggish,” Davis said, “but in the last one, I picked it up a little bit and had a pretty decent match. I was a little more aggressive on my feet.”

“It’s real nice having Levi and Joe in there,” said Heights coach Mike Eckenrode, who also has Aaron Gill (285) alive in the consys. “They’re both looking pretty solid. Joe looked much better in the second one.”

Reed pulled out a 3-1 win over Mount Union’s Nick Smith with a last-second takedown to reach the semis, where he’ll face Burrell’s returning champ Allan Beattie. On the other side of the bracket, Austin Buttry will face Southmoreland’s Jake Beistel, a 2-1 tiebreaker winner over Gill. Buttry was up 3-2 on Jefferson Morgan’s Ian Wolfe when he chinned Wolfe to his back and pinned him in 4:23.

“I thought he wrestled well,” Lazor said. “I thought he really controlled the match, created any offense that was going on and it was nice to see him on top with a nice little chinback.”
