Altoona tries to keep impressive streak going

Altoona Area High School boys track and field coach Mike Adams begins his 10th season as the helm of the Mountain Lions with an accomplishment under his belt that very few coaches around the country – if any – can boast about.

In the past decade under Adams, Altoona has a perfect 76-0 record in dual meets. Altoona returns a good nucleus from last season’s District 6-AAA championship team and has a chance not only to extend its remarkable dual-meet record, but have great success in the postseason as well.

State College will pose a significant hurdle – no pun intended – according to Adams, though.

“State College has a legitimate shot at a state championship this year,” he said. “They’re pretty good.”

Bellwood-Antis enjoyed a 15-0 dual-meet season last year but was hit significantly by graduation, and veteran coach Nick Lovrich is looking for big contributions from the younger members of his team this spring.

The outlook is hopeful for both Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic coach Brad Kanuch and Hollidaysburg coach Adam Ulery, while first-year Central coach Ray Brooks has been impressed with his team’s enthusiasm in the preseason.

Tyrone coach Chris Shedd thinks that if his team stays injury-free, the Golden Eagles could do well in the postseason, and Northern Bedford is led by senior Blake Over, who earned state medals in the triple and long jumps last spring.

Also returning is Tussey Mountain senior Darrin Sipes, who was a state medalist in the 100 dash last year.

Northern Cambria features senior Gus Yahner, who finished sixth in Class AA states in the pole vault year ago.

A capsule breakdown of the area teams follows:
