Russell highlights big day for ’Cats

There are good first days at the District 6 Class AA Tournament, and then there are the great openers that Huntingdon turned in on Friday at the AAHS Fieldhouse.

Highlighted by Nathan Russell’s 100th win in the second round, the Bearcats pushed 10 of its 13 wrestlers into the semifinals and have the team lead by 29 points going into today’s action as they attempt to win their first team title.

In addition to Russell, Huntingdon’s Collin Glorioso (113), Tyler Scott (120), Devon Green (132), Jacob Oliver (145), Jon Wagner (152), Eric Lynn (160), Logan Fisher (170), Matt Norris (182) and Mitchell Lauer (195) advanced to the semis.

“I can’t be more happier,” Bearcats coach Jon Mykut said. “Our guys wrestled really well all day long. Ten in the semis is pretty impressive for us. That just shows the kids we have, and now we’ve got to pick it up tomorrow and keep it going. The goal is to get as many guys through to regionals as we can, and how we try to do that is wrestle the same way we have all year long. Wrestle physical and a full 6 minutes, and that’s what we did today.”

“We’re doing well. I’m proud of my teammates,” Russell said. “We wrestled hard all season in the wrestling room, and it shows here.”

Russell wasn’t the only one to reach 100 wins. Cambria Heights’ Joe Davis earned his with a tough 3-2 win over Central’s Ethan Kennedy in the quarters, and in the same round, Mount Union’s Dylan Smith reached the plateau with a 3-1 win over Penn Cambria’s Jake Driskel.

Davis’ win was part of a pretty good night for the Highlanders as Levi Niebauer (160), Dalton Waksmunski (170) and Aaron Gill (285) made the semis. While a No. 2 seed did fall in the second round at 132 when Mount Union’s Robbie Steel pinned PC’s Zach Stevens in 1:55, Waksmunski’s 8-4 win over Bellwood-Antis’ Nick Torsell, the Mirror’s top-ranked 17-pounder, in the quarters, was arguably the biggest win of the day.

It was a very good day, actually, for area wrestlers as 26 from the Mirror coverage area advanced to the semis.

Central Cambria moved Max Murin (106), Ian Ostrowski (113) and Tom Opdenhoff (126) into the semifinals. Penn Cambria’s Nolan Link (106), John Wilkinson (220), Tyrone’s Jason Schopp (138) and Jared Beckwith (195), Central’s Brock Biddle (113) and Nick Hoenstine (138), Moshannon Valley’s Kent Stewart (182) and Jack Bunnell (285) and Glendale’s Jon Rojas (132) also reached the semis.

The top-seeded Russell didn’t spend too much time on the mat, getting a pin in 1:05 in his first bout for his 100th and then pinning Portage’s Chase Fox in 56 seconds in the quarters to earn a semifinal berth against one of the favorites, Marion Center’s Brandon Heberling, who had pinned his way through.

“It felt great,” Russell said. “That was the goal at the beginning of the year, and it felt good to get it at districts in the first round. I think I’m wrestling pretty good so far, but the tournament is not over. I have a tough one in the next one. My goal is to win districts, so I’ve got two more to win. I’m looking forward to it, but I’ve got to show up.”

“Getting that 100th win in the first match is a credit to him. He’s worked very hard in the offseason,” Mykut said. “I know he’s got a tough match in the semis, but he’s looking forward to it.”

Davis started his march through the rock-solid 126-pound weight class – eight of top guys have 18 wins and top four are regional qualifiers – with a pin and then made a first-period takedown and third-period escape stand in another close win over Kennedy. When the final second expired, 100-win signs popped up in the Heights cheering section.

Davis will face another area guy in the semis in Opdenhoff, who advanced with a 6-0 win over Penns Valley’s Jared Hurd.

“That was about the match we expected with Kennedy because that’s pretty much how it went during the regular season,” Heights coach Mike Eckenrode said. “One hundred wins is good no matter how you get them. As far as the semis, it doesn’t get any easier.”

Waksmunski and Torsell were tied, 2-2, in the second when Waksmunski notched a takedown. He added an escape and a takedown in the third, and Torsell, who suffered a controversial loss in last year’s consolations to get eliminated, responded with a reversal before Waksmunski escaped to set the final score.

“That was huge,” Eckenrode said. “I don’t think he’s wrestled as well as he did against that Torsell kid. I would say that may have been Waksmunski’s best match of the year. He finished his stuff, he was quick, aggressive and did a heck of a job.”

Fisher provided excitement when he followed his first-round pin with a pin of Blairsville’s Nick Pecze in 1:13, using a splade for the fall.

“Fisher is just one of those guys who is very good with his hips and has a funky style,” Mykut said. “He hooked up a splade on a head, inside single and you can never count him out of a match. I’ve seen that from him a couple times this year. That’s just the way he wrestles.”

Notes: Today’s wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m. with the fourth round of consolations. The semifinals and fifth round of consys follow at noon. The consy finals are at 5:30, and the championhip finals are at 6:45. … The Hall of Fame ceremony will precede the finals. … Torsell got a bye in his consy bout.
