Ridge, Huntingdon advance at PIAA mat tourney
HERSHEY – Chestnut Ridge and Huntingdon rolled to convincing wins in the first round of the PIAA Duals at the Giant Center.
Ridge earned a 37-22 win win over Montoursville, and Huntingdon handed South Fayette its second loss, 43-15.
The Lions got pins from Dustin Ickes (120) and Trent Crouse (145) and a major decision from Colby Hillegass (152). They were up 25-22 before finishing the meet with an overtime win by Austin Buttry (285), a forfeit win by Aaron Burkett (106) and a decision by Blake Dunlap (113).
“I thought we wrestled well,” Ridge coach Greg Lazor said. “I though we could have been more aggressive, but we won the matches we should have. It’s going to be a tough tournament. We have to get better and better.”
The Bearcats utilized a lineup shift, inserting freshman Seth Baney at 145 and bumping some wrestlers up a weight. Tyler Morningstar (220) and Mitchell Lauer (285) won by fall, while Tyler Scott (120) had a technical fall, and Nathan Russell (138) and Matt Norris (195) had major decisions. Baney won by decision.
“I think we wrestled awesome,” Huntingdon coach Jon Mykut said. “The kids went after it. We did a little scouting on them. Baney would probably be 20-match winner on most teams. We’ve been holding that card all year. He’s a solid freshman.”
Ridge now has a big quarterfinal match against Boiling Springs, ranked second by Off The Mat, at noon today. Huntingdon faces third-ranked Reynolds also at noon.
