Kittanning’s Nolf captures fourth District 7 title

Kittanning two-time state champion and Penn State recruit Jason Nolf added to his impressive wrestling resume by capturing his fourth District 7 title and being named the Outstanding Wrestler on Saturday at Chartiers Valley.

Nolf pinned Beth-Center’s Tony Welsh in 1:22 to win the 145-pound title, hike his season record to 37-0 and his career mark to 169-1. He pinned his way through the tournament, and with 25 falls this season, he has 105 for his career.

Nolf will will be vying for his fourth Southwest Regional Tournament title this weekend at the Cambria County War Memorial. Possible finals opponents are Huntingdon’s Jacob Oliver and Chestnut Ridge’s Trent Crouse, who are in the other bracket.

There will be another returning state champ at the War Memorial in Derry sophomore George Phillipi, who rolled to the 120-pound title Saturday with an 18-3 technical fall over Freedom’s Kody Komara.

Sleigh earns fourth title

Fans who come to the AAHS Fieldhouse this weekend for the Northwest Regional Class AAA Tournament will also see a four-time district champion in DuBois’ Tom Sleigh, who won his fourth District 4-9 title with a 17-1 technical fall in 3:36 over Selinsgrove’s Austin Lewis in the 195-pound finals.

Sleigh is 29-0 and is the top-ranked 195-pounder in the state. Sleigh finished third at the PIAA Championships last season.

St. Marys won the team title for the first time since 2002 and advanced 11 wrestlers to the regional tournament.
