Huntingdon alive, Ridge goes home at PIAA mat event

HERSHEY – Huntingdon went 1-1 on the second day of the PIAA Duals at the Giant Center and remains alive for a medal, but Chestnut Ridge went 0-2 and was eliminated.

Reynolds defeated Huntingdon, 40-15, in the quarterfinals, but the Bearcats responded with a 36-24 win over Towanda in the second round of consolations. Boiling Springs beat Ridge, 39-27, in the quarterfinals, and Burrell avenged an Ultimate Duals loss to the Lions, 31-26, in the consolations.

Huntingdon (20-2) will wrestle Burrell (13-4) at 9 this morning in the consolation quarterfinals. The Bearcats will have to win two meets to get to the consolation finals.

Against Reynolds, Huntingdon’s Nathan Russell (138) had the only pin, and freshman star Jacob Oliver suffered his first loss, 8-5, to Levi Stoyer at 145.

“I thought we wrestled well today,” Huntingdon coach Jon Mykut said. “Reynolds is obviously tough. There were a lot of close matches, and we didn’t win many of them. Jake tried to scramble in the final 10 seconds or so and got taken down.

“We rallied the tropps and beat a good Towanda team. We’re not going to change anything. I don’t know there is a key to the [Burrell] match. We have to wrestle our physical style and wrestle all 6 minutes. I expect the same effort as always.”

In the win over Towanda, Collin Glorioso (113), Matt Wilson (126) and Russell (138) had pins, and the Bearcats got key decisions from Mitchell Lauer (220), Devon Green (132), Oliver (145), Jon Wagner (152), Logan Fisher (170) and Matt Norris (182).

Ridge got pins from Blake Dunlap (113) and Conner Buttry (182) against Boiling Springs and a technical fall from Aaron Burkett (106).

The Lions (19-5) beat Burrell, 31-29, at the Ultimate Duals, but the Bucs won two of the three bouts that were decided by a point. Trent Crouse (145) and Buttry (195) had Ridge’s only pins.
