Area represented well in DII hoops

Several area women have been making an impact for their respective Division II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference basketball teams this season.

Through Jan. 20, Altoona graduate Kayla DeCriscio is averaging 11.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. DeCriscio was also third in 3-point percentage in the PSAC.

Fellow Altoona graduate Lauren Hippo is averaging 4.5 points and two rebounds a game for Edinboro, and Shelby Reimer, also an Altoona graduate, is averaging 7.9 points and 2.6 rebounds per game for Millersville.

Hollidaysburg graduate Morgan Griffith is averaging 9.5 points and 8.9 rebounds a game for Shippensburg. Griffith’s rebound total is sixth in the league.

The Lock Haven women’s team has three area players.

Altoona graduate Marrysa Moyer is averaging 16.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, which is good enough for seventh in scoring and third in rebounding in the league.

Fellow Altoona graduate Lysa Mealing is averaging 5.3 points and 6.3 rebounds, and Hollidaysburg graduate Hannah Gildea is averaging 5.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.

Hollidaysburg graduate Elle Collins scored 19 points for the St. Vincent women’s basketball team in a win over Waynesburg and added 12 points in a triumph over Chatham. St. Vincent is 9-1 through 10 games.

Taylor Freeman, a Penn Cambria graduate, led the Washington and Jefferson women’s volleyball team in attack percentage this past season.

Bellwood-Antis graduate Brian Leap broke a personal indoor record with a long jump of 23-5.25 and finished second for the Penn State track and field team at the Nittany Lion Open.

Altoona graduate Wade Endress of Penn State finished second in the mile run with a time of 4:10.92 behind only Georgetown’s Gil Ryan, who won the event in 4:09.04.

Altoona graduate Julian Howsare and Bishop Carroll graduate James McCombie were recently named to the Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-American team.

McCombie was named to the first team squad for his efforts as a punter for the Slippery Rock football team.

Howsare was picked to the third team squad for the second consecutive year for his play at Clarion.

Evan Ruggles, a Hollidaysburg graduate who plays football at Mansfield, was recently named an honorable mention to the Collegiate Sprint Football League.

Ruggles finished the season finished fifth in the league with 53 tackles and led his team with six sacks.

Junior Paul Kuhn of the Juniata College men’s volleyball team was named the first Continental Volleyball Conference Player of the Week, the league last week. He recorded a career-high 20 kills in the Eagles win 3-1 over Rutgers-Newark.

Tesa McKibben finished out her historic St. Francis University women’s soccer career by being named an NCAA statistical champion for points per game in 2013.

Penn State soccer freshman Brittany Basinger, sophomore Mallory Weber, head coach Erica Walsh and the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team captured the CONCACAF Championship last Sunday after defeating Mexico, 4-0, in the title match at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
